Novato is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 33,752 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and has a registered name of "Novato" meaning "New Year's Eve." It became an incorporated town in 1853. The first post office opened in 1865. The city started as a small ferry landing at the mouth of the tidal creek known today as Creek Roadstead and was named for Captain George Novate, who had owned land at this location since 1849. In 1856, Capt. Novate donated land to build what would become the first school in Marin County - Mr. Fenton's Schoolhouse (now part of Stanford University). This initial structure served grades one through four until 1861 when it was replaced by Our Lady's Parish School which operated until 1865 when it became part of our Lady's Elementary School District #5160-A annexation by Novato Township (later Novato) because there were not enough buildings available to accommodate all students from whole township! Novato officially became a town on December 15th, 1853 with Wm Halsell as its first Mayor and Cpl Donnellan as its first Selectman! With only 10 residents then and just 1 store open for business there wasn't much to do so incorporation came about to provide some form of government &protect citizens from being left out during early years especially with many new residents coming daily from San Francisco! In 1886 Lt Col John Boice assumed command 5th Cavalry Regiment stationed here alongwith numerous other military installations including Camp Roberts built on Muir Woods completing Army maneuvers hereabouts designed to improve Cadet Training methods utilized throughout America becoming history’s largest Infantry camp ever completed across country reaching maximum occupancy capacity numbering nearly 5000 soldiers/majors & their families living here permanently during that peak period ending September 1945 averaging almost 7 days per week / 63 hours every week free for civilians(!!) also dozens upon dozens of civilian workers recruited thru Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union Local 6B prior to World War II!!! On February 14th 1907 we had our very own parade down Main Street starting at 11 am led byOur Lady’s Parish School First Class Miss Nancie Klima & ended up following her “Great American March” march past City Hall ending up back at school where we enjoyed refreshments afterward before Again leading our own parade next day [March 15th]
