In 1850, a group of European settlers founded a small farm near present-day Novato. They started farming coffee beans, which were later sold for money to other buyers. The first commercial coffee processing plant was built in 1885 in what is now downtown Novato.

It is the seventh-most populous city in Marin County and the second most populous city within the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco. The City of Novato was platted in 1887 by George W. Norris and named for Captains John Brougham of HMS Bounty fame and Nathaniel Brownlow of USS Constitution fame. The first Europeans to encounter Novato were fishermen from Japan who came ashore on Hatteras Island on December 12, 1775, during their voyage around Cape Horn. They had come from Osaka and were looking for a passage to China through the Strait of Magellan. Captain James Cook discovered Asia's only coast line in 1779 when he sailed his Endeavor along the southern tip of today's Marin County while searching for new land to explore. Captain Cook's discovery marked what would become known as "the era of exploration." A group of Russian fur traders arrived in Novato on October 27, 1821 with their ship Pskov under command of Pyotr Kapitanovich Lagachkovsky and chartered vessel Moskva under captain Alexei Malakhovskii. They landed at Point Reyes Station before continuing their journey up the Pacific Coast to Fort Ross (now Petaluma) onFebruary 14, 1825 where they traded goods with Spanish traders living at Santa Cruz de la Sierra Mission near Monterey Peninsula

Novato is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 25,729 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Marin County and the largest city west of San Francisco. Novato is located on the north shore of Golden Gate Bay and has a population density of 905 people per square mile (314/km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Novato were Spanish missionaries in 1779. They found Native Americans living here as early as 1789 when they explored this area for trade purposes looking for Mission Documents that would show Spain's ownership of California. In 1821, Captain John Sloat sailed up thebay and named it Sloat Bay after Commodore John Sloat who donated land to establish American warships off Golden Gate Bay during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, section 8 of Rancho Rinconada was sold to Don Rafael Márquez by General Mariano Castro for $10,000 due to public pressure from citizens in San Francisco over land grants given out by Governor David Yount to wealthy individuals and investors.
