Novato is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 36,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay and adjacent to Tiburon Peninsula on the northwest shore of Sausalito Island. Novato became part of Marin County as part of the 1909 local government consolidation. The first Europeans to visit what is now Novato were Mexican soldiers who camped there in 1817, during General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's campaign against Mexico City. Lt. José Castro reported seeing "a great many white people" near Sausalito when he traveled through that area on his way back from duty with Captain David Hunter in 1824; these people may have been early settlers or travelers passing through the area on their way to or from San Francisco. In 1868, John Butterfield opened a ferry service between Tiburon Peninsula and Sausalito Island which became very popular due to its short ride and easy access by boat from either side of San Francisco Bay. The town site was selected for its position: close to water but out of sight of it so that no one could accidental discovery it while exploring new areas around Marin County. On July 1, 1905, when Marin County was established as a county, Novato annexed Tiburon Peninsula from Monterey County - making it an unincorporated community outside of Novato proper. The following year saw the establishment of a post office within the limits incorporated into Novato - opening up some much-needed commerce for what had become an isolated community relying primarily upon ship operators operating out of Tiburon Peninsula for shipping supplies and passengers between Point Reyes Station (now Ukiah) on Sausalito Island and downtown San Francisco

Novato is a city located in Sonoma County, California. It was incorporated on November 3, 1853. The population was 54,752 at the 2010 census. The Novato area has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. In 1772, Mission San Francisco de Asís founded a mission in what is now Novato and named it after St. Francis of Assisi. At this time, most of what is now Sonoma County had not yet been acquired by Spain and there were no European settlements in the region other than small villages scattered around Napa Valley and Mendocino Coast counties. On July 9, 1850, Mexican land grants were given to 25 citizens of Monterey County by Governor Francisco Pico to establish Rancho Rinconada del Norte (later Rancho Frio de Taos). This area included much of present-day Novato as well as parts of today’s Windsor and Emeryville Counties. On February 14, 1851 an act was passed which created the Town of Novato with a population of fifteen residents and granted all male settlers within its boundaries one year’s land purchase for $5 per acre with passage also providing for building churches and schoolhouses “for use hereinafter”. On May 11th same year Squire Nicholas Fenton purchased from Juan Rodriguez y Valdivia part of Rancho Rinconada del Norte which extended into present-day Santa Rosa County In 1853 Michael Llewellyn donated 2 square miles (4 km²) east of town to become Yountsburg Park which later became UC Berkeley campus
Novato was founded in 1849 by three men who became its first residents. The town was named after General John B. Novak, the hero of the Mexican-American War. In 1850, a post office was established in Novato and the name changed to Novato Township in 1851. In 1856, a school was built and the name changed to Novato School District. The town's first library was opened in 1861 and it continued to operate until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts.
