In 1825–26, another group led by Captain George Fife explored nearby Mount Diablo National Monument and found gold again; this time around , producing over $5 million in gold coins from 10 ounces (27 grams) per ton (.10 oz/cu piece) according to some estimates In 1851–52 an American Explorers’ Club Expedition discovered shale oil reserves at Lake Elsinore which led to development there beginning about that year. The original Novato oil well was drilled by Judge Leonard Woodruff & Company onshore just outside modern-day Novato City limits on July 3rd 1865 using what has been called “the first successful opencast deep water well drilling campaign ever attempted in North America” In 1870s John Sutter moved his family from Sacramento into what is now known as farmstead #2 near— but not including—present-day Novato Village; they renamed it Sutterville after their families’ move. They started renting out land north of present day Decatur Street between Soquel Avenue and Hercules Boulevard; this would become what became known as Sutter Park today In 1876 Lt Colonel Charles Wainwright surveyed Rancho Rinconada northeast of present day East Palo Alto Wainwright named it Wainwright Valley after him It wasn't until 1915 when private developer Edwin Drake developed Santa Clara Valley Airfield south of Novato Village for military use then sold parts thereof back to the military for civilian use before selling rights back to Drake in 1935 which included one runway long used by instrument training planes during World War II .
