Novato, California is a city located in Sonoma County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 54,467. Novato is one of Northern California's most ethnically and racially diverse cities and has been called "the cultural mecca of the South Bay" because of its concentration of Japanese-Americans and Latinos. The city's economy is based on agriculture, industry, and services. It is home to several universities—University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), Sonoma State University (SUS), and Marinette School District—and many businesses including Hewlett-Packard Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Google Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook LLC, Oracle Corporation, Nestlé SA, Boeing Co., Toyota Motor Sales & Service Company and Kaiser Permanente HealthCare System. The name "Novato" means "New Village." The original settlement on what is now Novato was founded by Captain John Sloat in 1849 as Yountville for his family’s sheep ranch that stretched from Pittsburg to Ukiah. In 1855 Captains George Atherton and Hiram Bingham organized a group of military veterans who purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of town from Amador County for $1 per acre ($10/ha). This area became known as Sloat Ranch because it lay within the boundaries set by Captain John Sloat when he claimed it in 1849. In 1860 James Fenton erected a adobe house on what would become Novato Avenue near today’s High Street Pioneer Square while working with local investors to sell land around the new town site. In 1863 Fenton married Maria Martinez; they had two children: AntonioFenton (1864-1932) who worked as an electrician for Pacific Gas & Electric Company until 1923 when he retired in San Francisco; and OctavioFenton Jr.(1868-1945) who also served in World War II with the United States Naval Reserve Fleet at Sausalito before becoming a real estate agent with JBG Realtors after the war. When Captain John Sloat died unexpectedly in 1861 his heirs sold their interest in Yountville to Humboldt County which then divided the property among its own members!(Amador County did not become part of California until 1850.) One group acquired much land northward due east towards Redwood Valley while another group acquired most southward towards Novato proper.(This process continued through various ownership changes until 1865 when all property within present day Novato boundaries were acquired by San Francisco.) Eugene Bogue donated land northeast corner lot 1st block North opposite Stonington Streets which formed what we know today as Elmira Road just west of MacKinnon Drive./ He also donated large blocks bounded by Union Avenue NW wing extension SE corner Warriors Way SW corner Lots 5th Row 2nd Block NE side across from Central Library building lots 6th Row 3rd Block NW side across from Fillmore Elementary School buildings etc.. Today this area includes much modern development including: Home Depot Center/Starbucks Coffee Shop / Safeway supermarket - All three are inside City limits .. . . . . . . There have been numerous other donations over time such as: Oak Knob Golf Course lot off Elmira Rd./ Just outside City Limits between MacKinnon Dr./ Springridge Dr./ Dutch Bros.- Marketplace open late Sat night into Sun morning since 1870

Novato, California is a town located in Marin County, California. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is on the East Coast of San Francisco Peninsula. In 1849 it was founded by Ezra Richardson as a small agricultural community on Rancho Rinconadapec. The name Novato came from Spanish meaning "New Estate." November 1849 saw the first post office in Novato open with mail from Sausalito. At that time there were only two dwellings in town- one belonging to Mr. Richards and one occupied by Capt. John Larkin of Sonoma Valley who had come overland from Monterey Bay with his family in 1847. On July 14, 1860,President James Buchanan issued Executive Order 9398 calling for all citizens of California to take up arms against Mexico if they did not feel their rights were being respected by their Mexican masters.. As a result of this order many soldiers and civilians from around the state converged on Novato where they raised enough flags and banners to adorn local homes for what would become known as "The Californian War". After several weeks of skirmishes and civil war fought along public squares, streets and farms alike, on October 20, 1861 Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez marched into town without warning residents or forcing them to take up arms against their government. A series of bloody massacres followed as looters took whatever they could find including human heads which are still found throughout downtown Novato today (it's also estimated that between 50-70%of all human remains found in Marin County during this time were associated with various wars fought within or outside of town). On December 15th Mexican forces withdrew after suffering heavy losses; however Octaviano Martinez who commanded Santa Rosa's battalion remained entrenched inside town until he was relieved by American forces December 26th just prior to an overall Uprising planned for January 1st which ultimately failed due to superior Mexican forces under General Don Enrique Peña leading an armybmnd consisting mostly cavalry instead of infantry supported by artillery
Novato, California was founded by Francisco B. Alvarado in 1821 as the site of an adobe mission. The first post office in Novato was established in 1824. In 1853, Novemberato became a town when it was annexed by San Francisco. By 1865, the population of Novato had reached 6,000 people and it became a city on February 14, 1870. On December 15, 1890, San Mateo County was created from part of Marin County and Novato became its seat. The City Council moved to Daly City after being displaced by the new city's rapidly growing population. On May 7, 1992, the city limits were expanded to include parts of unincorporated Santa Clara County
