The Naval Air Station Novato ( NAS Novato) was a United States Navy airfield located in the city of Novato, California. The airfield was opened on 15 November 1943 and operated by the United States Navy as an auxiliary airfield for the University of California, Berkeley. NAS Novato became operational as an independent naval air station on 18 May 1944 and served until its closure in 1949. The first jets were used at NAS Novato when they arrived in 1945 from the Naval Air Station Long Beach. In 1947, NAS Novato joined the Pacific Fleet and began to provide aerial refueling for ships off of various operations including Operation Crossroads which took place during the Korean War. NAS Novato also participated in exercises with Japan which included JAPAN-O-WAR (1948). In 1955, NASNovato became home to McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company'sDouglas A-4 Skyhawk fighter jet program which produced some of the most advanced fighters ever built by American Aviation Corporation (AAC). In 1957, the first Boeing 707s arrived at NASNovato from Boeing Field Seattle and soon afterwards commenced service with the US Marine Corps flying both cargo and passenger planes over Japanese waters during World War II era patrols dubbed "Operation Overlord". On 1 July 1959, Boeing Field Seattle closed its doors forever after more than 50 years of aviation production by U.S. airlines. The last commercial airliner to land at Seattle Municipal Airport was Pan Am 103 on 17 October 1959 making it one of only two airports in America still serviced by commercial airlines(the other being John F Kennedy International Airport Chicago IL). From 1960 through 1967 all USAF activity at nearby Elmendorf AFB ceased completely because that airport had been gifted to NASA for use as a space center operated by NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center Van Allen Research Center Earth Science Division named "Ender's Game" after Neil Armstrong who became first human being to walk on Mars while serving aboard Apollo 11 spacecraft mission during 1969 campaign called "Saturn V Crusade" following Sputnik 1 launch attempt failure three days earlier on 14 July 1969 these activities resulted inNASNovato becoming permanently closed down effective 1 January 1970 due to budget constraints within then newly created Department of Defense National Aeronautics and Space Administration having no dedicated facility or spare parts available within their jurisdiction for continued military aircraft storage & repair facilities along with consequent high costs associated with maintaining large numbers aging combat aircraft especially when compared against new modern aerospace manufacturing plants such as Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Co., Missiles & Rockets plant located adjacent directly outside San Francisco Bay Area known locally as Redwood City CA) . Since then there have been multiple proposals made for reactivation or redevelopment of NASNovatos former airspace but none have yet come true resulting in significant financial investment required thereby preventing any major revival or redevelopment taking place unfortunately leaving present dayNASnovatowith few operational assets remaining much like many post-World War II infrastructure projects that failed due primarily to lack of political will or economic opportunity) . Today there are several small businesses operating outof offices near San Francisco Bay Area known informally as The Harbor District area surrounding downtown San Francisco providing limited access public transportation options however often times these businesses do not have hangar or flight services available making it difficult if not impossibleto fly into/outof town currently limiting their operation primarily to providing logistics support Caltransprojects ongoing reconstruction project coming up around Terminal 4 since 2013 hasfailedto improve parking situation existing lot has numerous emergency vehicles parked next door contributing factors resultantin low traffic levels sometimes reaching dangerous levelsduring moderate events resultingin several collisions between vehicles & pedestrians

The first people to live in what is now Novato were Native Americans who hunted mammoths around present-day Redwood Valley before moving southward about 14 miles (23 km) to find open land where they could settle down among oak trees. Smith & his family arrived from New England after traveling through Oregon country on their way to be pioneers in this area of California which had been claimed by both Spain and Mexico since 1821th Century A&P Franciscan Mission days according to historical records Prior to western settlement there was extensive competition between Spanish missionaries who wanted access to rich gold deposits throughout much of central California while Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena tried vainly to stop Ulysses S. Grant’s army from crossing Baja California into Mexico on September 9th of that year while General Crocker led American forces across Nevada Territory – opening what would become known as “the Gadsden Purchase” On October 16th 1850 , Don José de Arguelles y Balboa purchased Rancho Nob Hillo Seca east of today’s downtown Novato from Josefa Ortiz Cabrillo for $1,500 dollars . This rancho adjoined Rancho Santa Clara de Atascadero just north of modern day San Rafael . The property then lay within present-day Marin County boundaries

In 1916, Admiral George Dewey presented Rear Admiral John Jellicoe with a set of new torpedoes for his ship HMS Repulse. This was one of the earliest displays of formal technology between countries at this time. Dewey later became captain Pacific Fleet during World War II and presented Jellicoe with an even more special gift - two Battleship models that had never been seen before!

Novato is located in San Mateo County, California on the Pacific coast. It was founded in 1849 as a town on the east side of San Francisco Bay by Chinese laborers who had been brought over from Guangdong Province. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. In 1876, Novato became part of the new state of California and by 1920 it had reached its current population of over 120,000 people. The first real development at Novato took place around 1870 when two brothers-in-law, John Wyleigh and Augustus Temple paid $5 for 8 acres (3 hectares) of land to be erected as a farmstead called "Temple Farm." This was followed by another purchase in 1872 for $10 from Valentine Richardson which included an additional 2 acres (1 hectare). A year later, William Hutton purchased 3 acres (1 hectare) adjacent to Temple Farm for $15. This larger parcel would eventually become known as "Hutton's Ranch" and would remain in the hands of the family until 1959 when it was sold to Dr. Arthur Ashe for use as a golf course. In 1875, entrepreneur George Hearst bought property adjoining Hutton's Ranch for $30 which he turned into what is now Hearst Castle. That same year saw the founding of the Novemberato ferry company which transported goods between Novato and Sausalito across Alcatraz Strait. In 1877, James Noyes built a small mill on US Highway 1 near today's intersection of SR 441/SR 238 just north of Novato Airport. By 1888 there were already several businesses established in Novato including Jardine & Co., Storer Brothers grocery store, Post & Telegraph office and Wyleigh Bros.' restaurant/tavern which seated up to 50 people inside or outside with views across Alcatraz Strait to Half Moon Bay
