Oakdale, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded by the James family in 1876. The James family left their rancho (property) near Stockton to move to Oakdale and start a new life. The first settler, John James, built a cabin on the east side of the creek that later became known as "The Rancho" in 1879. In 1902, the Post Office of Kern County was established at Oakdale with Wm. H. Bechtel as its first director. In 1912, the U.S. Postal Service merged with Western Union and moved its main office from Los Angeles toOakdale. In 1925, Mr. Jarrell bought out his brother-in-law's interest in The Rancho and started developing it into an agricultural center called "Jarrell Farms". He also had plans for building a larger home but these didn't materialize until after he died in 1951." In 1956 Congressman Edwin Meese purchased land west of town from Mr Jarrell for use as part of his presidential campaign headquarters complex which is still standing today." In 1963 General Electric constructed their corporate headquarters which remains extant today."
