The United States Army has a rich history in Oakdale, California. The first American military installation in the town was Fort Stockton, which was built in 1849. In 1861, Oakdale became the second town to be platted in San Bernardino County and it soon became an important garrison for the defense of southern California. From its inception, the military outpost served as a training ground for future officers and soldiers. In 1923, Oakdale was renamed Fort Worth Army Base after General John J. Pershing commandeered land from local farmers for the purpose of creating a large army training center. The base functioned as an important staging ground for both World War II and the Korean War. After the end of World War II, Fort Worth Army Base fell into disrepair and was closed in 1949. It wasn’t until 1966 that it reopened as Fort Worth National Military Park under then-President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration. Today,Fort Worth National Military Park is one of America’s most popular tourist attractions and it features many interesting historical landmarks such as Camp Sherman (site of some of World War I’s largest battles), Arlington Cemetery (home to several thousand veterans), and Dowell House (the former home of Secretary OF Defense James Forrestal). Additionally,Fort Worth National Military Park includes a number of battlefield sites including Gettysburg Battlefield and Chickamauga Battlefields.

Oakdale was founded by the Sac and Fox Indians in 1853. The first settler, John Thornton, built a cabin on the current site of Oakdale High School in 1854. By 1881, there were over 60 families living in Oakdale. In 1886, a school was founded at the current site of Oakdale Middle School. In 1912, the town was renamed to its present name of Ventura County after then-Governor Earl Warren.
