Oakdale is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It is located on the east side of the Kern River, about northwest of Fresno and southeast of Bakersfield. As of the 2010 census, its population was 10,878. The name "Oakdale" is derived from an oak tree that grew near the original town site. The first settler in what is now Oakdale was Hiram Sutter, who arrived with his family in 1848. Sutter's millstream ran through what is now town and he made a dam to impound it to provide water for his mill. The community developed around this mill and other industries that operated around it until World War II when development shifted focus to agriculture. Today, Oakdale remains a residential community with heavy agricultural emphasis; its primary economic sector has been agriculture since before Prohibition began in 1919. In recent years there have been efforts to revive some commercial activities in town such as retail sales and services at the post office and library; however these have not yet had any significant impact on overall local economy or village life. There are three elementary schools in town- Oakdale Elementary School (grades K-6), Midvale Middle School (7-12) and South Canyon High School (13-18). In 1828, gold was found at Sutter's Mill in nearby Stockton and this led to a rush of people into the area. The adobe buildings that stand today were built during this time. The Town of Oakdale was incorporated on December 3, 1846. It initially consisted of just a few hundred residents who grew crops and raised livestock. By 1860, when the railroad came through Oakdale, business had increased so much that a post office was constructed. By 1870, there were over 1,000 residents living in town. The early years of Oakdale's history were difficult because it competed with other towns for jobs in the farming community. However, within 10 years of incorporation, oak trees had grown so large that plowing became impossible and street names were changed to honor them (such as "OAKDALE ROAD").
