Oakdale, located in the North Bay of San Francisco, is a community that has been coffee-growing for over 125 years. The first coffee tree was planted in 1856 and today there are more than 20 different coffee roasters situated in and around Oakdale. In addition to its rich history, Oakdale is also home to several important coffee brands such as El Cajon Coffee, Maxwell House Coffee, and Java Joes. The earliest record of coffee being grown in this area comes from 1824 when William Richardson noted “a small piece of groundnut land on the coast near Point Fermin” was being cultivated for roasted beans. By 1860, it had become known as “the heart of the country for coffee” due to its location and quality of soil. Over time, oak trees were gradually replaced by other trees as the planting process became more efficient. Today, oak trees are still used extensively to produce roasted beans and tea. Today's Oakdale "coffee belt" stretches from Steubenville through Milpitas and into Redwood City with smaller towns sprinkled throughout the area including Menlo Park, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and East Palo Alto. The popularity of espresso drinks - similar to those found in Rome - started hereabouts about 50 years ago when Italian immigrants began moving into north Bay cities such as Oakland and San Francisco looking for work opportunities (and maybe a little caffeine). They brought their own methods of brewing espresso which quickly spread throughout North America before reaching Japan where it gained popular attention during World War II thanks to General Douglas MacArthur's request for additional supplies (he preferred Japanese black teas). In recent decades there has been an increase in interest in high-quality whole bean coffees from beyond the United States - many people now consider Oakdale their go-to source for premium java products or single origins like Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or Guatemalan El Paso Robusta. Oakdale coffee history can be traced back to 1860 when a small family founded the Coffee House on Second Street. The Coffee House is now located in the Oakdale Historical Museum and it is still in use today as a business resource for locals and tourists alike. In 1875, J.P. Morgan established his coffee shop in downtown Oakdale and soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1907, the city of Oakdale passed an ordinance prohibiting public drinking establishments within its boundaries, which effectively closed down many of the local businesses that depended on coffee sales for their livelihoods.
