Grant administration authorized this plan and called for enlisting 1 million volunteers over five years starting in 1861-1865! However, because Of his involvement with Confederate forces during the Civil War, Grant was never able to take part in any meaningful way in that conflict! The end result of these efforts was not what either party wanted or expected! About 620 men died while serving in America’s west coast army during those five years; almost one percent of all enlisted personnel! Additionally, many men became addicted to gambling and alcohol which caused them great harm both on and off duty! Finally, there were also problems with unit cohesion as well as officer retention due to stress caused by combat mission requirements! All told, this program amounted to another failure by President Lincoln who decided against maintaining such an army on American soil!! Nevertheless, despite these shortcomings (and others), some units did serve throughout World War II including elements manning Camp Pendleton Naval Shipyard where thousandsserved aboard USS Arizona (1942-1945) during World War II’s “Greatest Generation” era; WWII veteran Dean Karnazes recalls: “It was really high-spirited times when you were out there working; we laughed so much I can still taste it today...It [the navy] would come up behind us like an animal attacking...You didn't know how you were going to make it out alive” (Karnazes). In fact General Dwight D Eisenhower once referred To Camp Pendleton as “the most difficult place I ever went...There's no telling what might have happened if [we] hadn't gone into action” (Eisenhower). It is interesting that even though Camp Pendleton Naval Shipyard ultimately proved unsuccessful at ending World War II successfully - resulting in more than 50 fatalities - Eisenhower remainsly grateful for its experience here: "I am grateful that we spent time here atCamp Pendleton" (Eisenhower). Oakdale is a small town in Northern California located on the San Joaquin River. It was founded in 1868 by John C. Frémont and his wife, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Oakdale is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 6,878. The town has a rich history that dates back to its establishment as part of the Central Valley. The original inhabitants of Oakdale were Native Americans who lived near the present day community of Dixon. In 1868, John C. Frémont and his wife, Laura Ingalls Wilder, moved from Dixon to what is now known as Oakdale after purchasing land from the natives. They named their new community after an old chestnut tree in their home village in Russia County, Illinois. John C. Frémont had been mounted on horseback when he discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 and decided to explorate for more gold near Sacramento City Limits in order to cash in on this newly discovered treasure trove! He quickly became successful and decided to establish himself permanently within California’s Central Valley where he would build his fortune trading goods across the region including flour, beans, potatoes and other crops with Mission Indians living along the way! In 1868, John C., Laura and their five children arrived at Fort Bridger on the Bancroft Trail west of Redding to start a new life amidst all that was new for them: San Joaquin Valley floorlands lying below them like some great unvetted geological panel; rolling hills of redwoods 5 miles away; springs bubbling out of sandstone cliffs 4500 feet above sea level; oak trees 1/2 mile high dotting tidy farming townsite farms averaging between 25 acres and 100 acres….what did they expect? Not much…..except maybe “a little bit better than being at Dixon” but not quite what they were expecting either! John & LilaFrémont started building their log cabin which still stands today on Lot #4 about one half mile east northeast of modern day town center (map). With snowshoes & dogsleds serviceable only during winter months these pioneer owners took full advantage of every inch of open country surrounding them…..and enjoyed it! Farming continued to be our primarystay……raising chickens & ducks for eggs ($3 per dozen), drying cornmeal for bread (1 bushel @ $1), making candles(!) from animal fat etc…………..and fishing local rivers throughout summer months using homemade spears made from longstaffed cedar branches thrust into deep water just upstream from shorelines….the possibilities were endless………………..until February 1865 when disease struck hard killing most locals (& any animals remaining) within 2 weeks…. profound changes had come over this area since Pima & Southern Paiute bands had numbered several hundred people hereabouts 10 years earlier!! All those good memories resulted in less production while also contributing factors leading up to today’s census designated place designation…..Oakdale

The mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America was to "establish religious worship on this continent" and so it moved its main church from San Francisco to Oakland in 1892. In 1909, Oakdale's first post office opened, and its first school was built. The community became an agricultural center due to its rich soils and ample rainfall. A new town hall was completed in 1954 and served as the community's primary meeting place until 1985 when a new gymnasium replaced it. A fire destroyed much of downtown Oakdale on March 14, 1984; however, local volunteers rebuilt most of the town hall and library before returning to their regular activities two months later. By 1990, there were only 76 residents remaining in what had once been a thriving small town with five schools and two churches. However, growth continued within Oakdale as several restaurants started up around thetown core (the original grocery store closed after 20 years) while other businesses began moving into older buildings vacated by previous occupants or demolished for more efficient use within current boundaries of shopping malls across Kern County today (e.g., Safeway).
