The history of the National Guard in Oakdale, California can traced back to 1881. The first units were raised in response to the 1881 San Joaquin earthquake. A commission was set up to organize and fund the National Guard and it was announced on May 25, 1881 thatOakdale would be one of the first cities in California to form aNational Guard unit. On September 1,1881,the first company of what would become the Oakdale City Guards was organized at 20 East Main Street. The guardsmen wore blue uniforms with green stripes and they were paid by county assessors. In 1903, a new battalion was organized at 210 South Second Street under command of Captain Edward J. Smith. The battalion served as an escort for President Grover Cleveland during his visit to Oakland on November 3rd and 4th. In 1917, Captain Eugene Leland granted citizenship to all members of the Oakdale City Guards who had been living within its boundaries since 1883 when they became part of the city militia

The Oakdale National Guard was organized on December 15, 1933 and began operations on January 1, 1934. The unit was redesignated the California National Guard on July 1, 1959. The present active duty status of the Oakdale National Guard is as of October 27, 2016. The first national guard unit inOakdale was the 9th Infantry Battalion which served from 1933-1934. On July 1, 1959 the battalion became part of the new California National Guard when it was activated at Hayward General Depot by order of Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.. The battalion served until 1972 when it relocated to Nevada and then Arizona due to budgetary cuts in state government support for military forces statewide. In 1986 the battalion returned toOakdale and continued service until 1996 when it disbanded due to budget restrictions within the newly reformed CalGendarmerie Reserve Force structure set up pursuant to AB 452 (Formerly known as Peace Officer Standards and Training Act).
Oakdale is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It lies east of Bakersfield on the Ajo River. The population was 2,846 as of the 2000 census. The name Oakdale may come from an incident that took place there in 1859 when four Mormons were falsely accused of raping a female prospector and her child. Although acquitted by a jury, they were then persecuted by local settlers who blamed them for what they saw as their own sinfulness. As a result of this occurred two other acts of violence against Mormon women: In 1885 two sisters were kidnapped and held at gunpoint until their father could ransom them; and four years later five LDS missionaries were falsely accused of sexually assaulting one woman while she was working near the community. This caused such an outcry that Governor Goodwin O'Connor pardoned all those charged,setting an example for other offenders and ending the persecution campaign which had continued since 1851.

Oakdale is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. The Oakdale post office has been in operation since 1892. The town was platted in 1887 by John Sutter and named for an oak tree near his Rancho San Gabriel. In 1907, the Sutter family donated of land to the local school district. In 1912, the first high school in Oakdale opened as La Jolla High School and it served students from both towns until 1967 when it became part of Sudden Valley Unified School District. The community experienced growth following World War II when defense contractors began to establish themselves here. A black-owned company, Lockheed Martin Missile Division developed a facility here that manufacturing guided missiles and other munitions products for American warplanes during World War II. During the early 2000s Oakdale's economy shifted towards its agricultural sector with increased production of crops such as corn, beans, wheat, and tomatoes; however there have also been some advances within the town including dune restoration and redevelopment projects which have brought new life to what had once been a sleepy corner of Kern county.
