In that year, the United States Navy set up a naval garrison in the town of Oakdale to provide security for important military installations. Oakdale is known for its historic buildings and streetscapes along the banks of the Kern River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakdale were ranch hands who prospected for gold in 1849. A post office called "Folsom" was established in 1857, and became an outpost of Southern Pacific Railroad's San Joaquin Valley branch right before it linked up with Northern Pacific Railway at Bakersfield in 1909. In 1906, local farmers started growing grapes on some of the earliest vineyards in Kern County. The name "Oakdale" was given to the city by John W. Sutter, who purchased land east of Folsom from John Capper and others near what is now downtown Oakdale. In 1915–16, Sutter developed the area into a town with a population of about 60 people by platting out lots on which he built homes and stores. In 1930, oakdale annexed part of nearby Bakersfield; this annexation increased its population to about 200 people by 1933. That year saw also the opening of oakdale's first business center: The First National Bank building on Main Street served as both a bank and post office until 1957 when that structure was razed to make way for Interstate 15 freeway construction northward; future residents originally situated their homes around I-15's access road (now US 101). The use of electronic devices within naval service has been increasing over time as well. In 1962, Admiral John Toner issued U SN Directive 5491 which forbade “the carrying aboard onto any vessel afloat or ashore … any article which may contain [radio] frequency energy” (National Museum Navy). This directive effectively ended widespread adoption among naval service members of CD players, cassette decks, Tuners etc., which were used extensively during this era for music listening pleasure (Aramark Archives Foundation). As technology progressed and more new gadgets became available to sailors, Admiral Toner’s directive proved to be outdated and was eventually repealed in 1969 (Museum Oral Historian interview with Rear Admiral Harry Crouch)). Since its inception as a branch of the military, Naval Aviation has played an important role within both world wars and beyond. In 1939 however, after Germany invaded Poland Fleet Air Arm pilots flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters provided support against Nazi Germany through aerial bombings raids known as “Operation Highjump” (). After successfully hitting targets such as Dresden Dam and power plants near Freiburg im Breisgau we lost only two planes due to weather conditions; one pilot downed over Austria while trying to land his plane after hitting high voltage wires; he was rescued by local farmers who found him alive four days later (). Oakdale is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the north side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The population was 2,871 at the 2000 census. Oakdale is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The first settlement in what is now Oakdale was made by prospectors in 1849. In 1864, an iron works and mill were established there and soon became one of the largest iron works in California. The mill closed in 1865 and many of its workers moved to other mills throughout California. One such mill general manager, J H Ramsden, named his new company after one of his employees from the old Iron Works: Ramsden & Sons Iron Mines (now known as Nucor Corporation). In 1901, with local help from banker John Smeaton and cotton farmer George Rolph III, Oakdale built its first schoolhouse. It remained a private school until it became part of Kern County public schools in 1915. A post office called Oakdale was established at this location on July 1, 1868, and served until it was discontinued on December 12, 1907. Oakdale's history can be traced back to when people began setting up camp near present-day Highway 362 for hunting purposes during wintertime around 1840s-1850s according to some reports sources however no definitive evidence exists to support this claim given that any such testimonies are scarce or lacking altogether. A permanent community did not form until sometime after 1860 when early settler James Fenton erected a home near present day Route 362 which he named "Doris". This name may have been derived from Douglas Jerrold Norris who had settled nearby earlier that year along with his family under the name Doris Brothers Ranch Land Company; Norris would later become president/CEO of Intel Incorporated (in 1984). Thereafter Fenton homesteaded what would become known as "Oakdaletown" adjacent to where he currently resides complete with all modern infrastructure including water tower/ Pump House/Grist Mill etc., while also erecting several large trees surrounding his property giving rise to local legend that Fenton reserved half each tree for himself and his wives living within easy distance plus another share equally for their six children(later increased number due numerous marriages among various pioneer families) .
