The Navy has been a part of our community for over 100 years. The shipyards and personnel that built the USS Constitution in 1814-1817, the USS Perry in 1851-1857, and the USS Arizona in 1912-1913 were all located in Oakdale. In 1932, Naval Shipbuilding Center was relocated from San Diego to Elmira, New York due to budget cuts within the Navy. However, the shipyards and personnel remain important parts of our community today. Oakdale is home to three naval shipyards - Naval Shipbuilding Corporation (NSC), Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) - as well as several associated research institutions - University of California Maritime School (UCS), Naval War College (NWC), Department of Defense Operational Test & Evaluation Command (ODTEC) - which provides testing and evaluation services for warships throughout North America. These institutions have helped contribute to Oakdale's current role as a center for naval vessel construction. This was followed by donations of submarines and other military equipment during World War 2. Oakdale is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. Oakdale is located in Fresno County. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The City of Oakdale was founded on October 25, 1887 by six citizens of Fresno and Madera counties who gathered to form a town pursuant to Act No. 7 of 1886. The first mayor was Wm Hiney and the first postmaster was Jno Burtis. On May 5, 1893, the San Joaquin Valley Railway arrived in town and began passenger service between Stockton and Visalia; this connection made Oakdale an important transportation center for central California. In 1911, construction began on what would become known as "The Great Lakeside Drive". This road connected downtown with what are now East Palo Alto and Yreka neighborhoods on the south side of Sacramento River near Highway 99W (now Interstate 5). Today's shopping district around The Great Lakeside Drive includes several large department stores such as Macy's and Sears as well as smaller shops including IGA Foods, PC World, Frys Food Store and Radio Shack
