Oakdale Police Department was started in 1923 by Capt. George W. Smith and Sgt. John Aiken as a patrol unit for the town of Oakdale. The department grew to include a full-time police force in 1937, and by 1945 it had its own station on Pacific Avenue. In 1969, Oakdale incorporated as a city and the Oakdale Police Department became an integral part of the city government. Today, the Oakdale Police Department is one of the most experienced law enforcement agencies in Southern California with over 275 officers who provide quality service to our community every day. Our department's history reflects this proud record, with many officers having served throughout various areas of law Enforcement including Patrol, Crime Prevention/Investigation (CPI), School Resource Officers (SRO) and SWAT Team members. Oakdale, California is a small city located in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California. The population was 17,994 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the east side of the Sacramento River and within commuting distance of many major metropolitan areas. In addition to its role as an agricultural center and bedroom community for western Sacramento, Oakdale also has a strong economy based on services such as education, healthcare, retail trade, and professional services. The first European settlement in what is now Oakdale was made by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1827 as part of his North American expedition. At that time it was known as Rancho San Francisco de las Pulgas (now part of Fair Oaks). The town began to form from land grants given out between 1837-1842 to various pioneers including John Sutter, Jedediah Smith, and others who had settled in the area after discovery of gold near Stockton in 1848. In 1858 there were just 10 residents living in what is now Oakdale when John Sutter arrived with his family from Wintney Creek where he had been working for Father Francisco Sanchez. He founded Sutter's Fort which served as a stopping point on his journey upriver to found Yuba City. There are several stories about how Sutter came up with the name "Oakdale." One tells story about him cutting down a tree near where present day Elmira Street and Amherst Avenue intersect and driving off into space with his new fortification because he could not find a better place for it among all the other trees he had chopping down that season. Another story says that one night while exploring some nearby hills he discovered an oak growing very tall - so tall that it reached above his head - so he named the fort after the tree. Sanchez granted permission for people to live within 200 yards (180 m) of their fort but no permanent buildings were built until 1861 when Sutter's daughter married Captain James Hutton who lived at Fort Point on Red Bluff Island before moving ashore to establish Hutton Landing which became downtown Oakdale shortly thereafter. As development occurred beyond Sutter's original boundaries both northward along Amherst Avenue towards Fair Oaks (later annexed by Sacramento) and southward along Elmira Street towards Downtown Sacramento growth continued unabated through most of this century with only modest deviations due largely to residential zoning laws at that time which limited developments closer to rivers or water supplies rather than open spaces or commercial corridors like today's streetscape design patterns following post-World War II suburban growth patterns throughout much East Coast America! In 1907 William Randolph Hearst purchased 6500 acres (250 km2) around present day Oakdale from José Joaquin Mora y Balboa for $10 million dollars making him one of America’s largest land owners during this period Although originally intended primarily as farmland homebuilder Mora never got around to constructing any dwellings although some farmsteads may have been built later on parcels acquired by other buyers; instead he devoted mosthis energies developing what would become Hearst Castle complete with grandiose architecture designed by noted architect George Atherton consisting mostly of three white brick towers each measuring 150 feet (46 m) high x 30 feet (9 m) wide x 15 feet (4 m), its walls surmounted by massive cast iron balconies reaching 40 feet (12 m) above ground level . From then until well into World War II much important military activity took place around Hearst Castle involving large numbers Of soldiers encampments/campsites being established both inside & outside Castlemount including useable kitchens & dining halls also numerous ammunition magazines etc.; however due principally & predominantly To Army Air Forces activities surrounding transmitters ORX-16( pronounced "orx-eh") Radar facilities located atop Castlemount hill; those days are long gone! Oakdale is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It lies on the south bank of the Kern River, east of Bakersfield. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakdale were Missionaries who came from San Francisco in 1827 and erected a mission there in 1828. They named their settlement after an oak tree that grew near the mission site. A year later another group of missionaries arrived and found that the indigenous people living here had abandoned their villages for lack of food and other necessities. Themissionary group organized a party to travel upriver and search for resources but they never reached Oakdale because they were attacked by Native Americans, who killed six members of the missionary party including Father Junipero Serra. In 1851 an act was passed by Congress which stated that any person found alive upon landing in American territory must be brought back to be punished and three men from this expedition were taken back to America with severe Indian wounds. From then on it became known as "Discovery Landing." In 1865 two brothers from Enterprise built a mill on the river at Discovery Landing which became one of the most important mills in Kern County due to its production of flour, cottonseed oil, lumber, shoes and other goods for local markets. The mill closed around 1960 but has been restored several times over since then. Oakdale also played an important role during World War II as it was home to many military personnel who lived there while stationed overseas or during training exercises such as those conducted at nearby Edwards Air Force Base between 1942-1945. A post office operated at Discovery Landing from 1907-1943; it was moved to North Hollywood in 1943 before being relocated again to its current location two years later when Highway 101 was extended southward into Kern County.
The Oakdale, California area was first settled in the late 18th century. The first known permanent residents of what is now Oakdale were Native Americans who lived near the present-day city of Sacramento. In 1827, Rancho San Joaquin de la Laguna was granted to John Sutter, one of the original investors in the Sacramento Valley Railroad. By 1830,Oakdale had a population of about 20 people. A year later, Sutter and his partner Edward Merchant bought the rancho and moved their families to it. In 1846, a group of Mormon settlers founded Farmington in present-day Fremont County when they discovered gold on the hills around them. The miners soon ran out of money and abandoned Farmington, but a few years later some new Mormons started up another mining operation at what is now called Oldtown. When news got out that gold existed further north than anywhere else in California, more Mormon settlers decided to come to Oakdale and start anew. In 1860, three brothers named Jameson bought a piece of land east of today’s town center from José Gomez for $5 per acre. They named their land “Oakdale” after an oak tree they saw while grazing their cattle on the property. This was probably because they thought it would be good ground for farming since there were no other trees nearby that could provide woodchips for fuel or pulp for papermakingback then. In 1865, two men by the name of Goodwin purchased part of Rancho San Joaquin de la Laguna from John Sutter for $2 per acre (the price had been raised to $10 per acre by Act No., 8 U .S., April 15th1865). Because this purchase included most of what is now Oakdale—an area that at that time consisted only of rough earth measuring about 30 feet square—it has been said that Goodwin established Oakdale as something more than just a simple ranching community; he even made it into an incorporated municipality with its own government! It wasn’t until 1888 that voters passed an ordinance makingOakdale an unincorporated municipality! In 1916–1917 locals built a small blockhouse known as the Pioneer Cabin on Union Pacific Railroad tracks east of town center which served as their local Post Office until 1949 when it was replaced by a larger Administration Building which still stands today!
