In the early 1800s, Oakdale was a small farming community in Stanislaus County, California. The town was founded on the site of an old mission and post office. In 1858, Oakdale became the first town in California to allow coffee beans to be cultivated and processed. The first coffee bean farmers in Oakdale were John Drysdale and George Healey. Drysdale started cultivating coffee beans in 1854 and Healey in 1859. The two men developed a method for roasting coffee that allowed for better flavor than those used by other farmers at the time. They also invented a way to grind the beans so that they would be evenly mixed with each other. As oakdale grew, it began to require more land than could be found within Stanislaus County proper. In order to accommodate its growing population,Oakdale established itself as a city in 1907. Over time, Oakdalers have come to appreciate their local Coffee City status and continue to produce high-quality coffees even while living outside of its boundaries

Oakdale Coffee was founded in 1984 by Tom and Kathy Schlosser. The two were looking for a new place to drink their coffee and found the perfect spot on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Oakdale. They started small, brewing three gallons of coffee each week. Over the years, they've built up a large production capacity and now produce over seventy-five thousand pounds of coffee per year!

The first people to live in what is now Oakdale were the Tongva people who came from Southern California about 1800. They named their new settlement for Captain James A. Oakley (1785–1836), an early settler in central Kern County and one of Sutter's generals during the Mexican War (1846–48). In 1858, the City and County of Los Angeles annexed parts of Kern County including what are now Oakdale and Gardena. The annexation created a new city with its own government and courts - Oakdale became an incorporated city on May 1, 1860 under Act No. 9 of 1860 (). On November 3rd/4th 1916 vintage automobiles were auctioned off at San Diego State University's Old Main building as part of its centenary celebration processional celebrating 100 years since San Diego State Agricultural College opened its doors to students with a curricular focus on Fine Arts & Technology which later would become known as San Diego State Polytechnic Institute & University

A number of cultural attractions are found within its boundaries including the University of Southern California's campus located just north of town; Canyon Lake State Recreation Area; as well as several mineral rights parcels surrounding the Kern River which provide some interesting research opportunities for scientists looking into early history of this area (e.g., evidence that water availability led to development).
