When the United States Army was founded in 1846, there wasn't a single military department in California. With only 3,000 soldiers and officers at its peak, the War Department set up a headquarters at Fort Point on San Francisco Bay. The first major gift to the army from Californians was a cannonball that was given to Major General George Armstrong Custer by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Kearny on November 15th, 1847. The next year, Captain John Sutter gave 100 rifles and ammunition to the troops stationed at Stockton. In 1850, Major General Winfield Scott ordered all American forces in California to be disbanded and their equipment sent back east. However, this didn't mean that military gifts stopped coming from Californians. In 1851, Captain Fenton Morse of the 1st Battalion of West Point's Independent Infantry donated 10 rifles and 10 cartridges to the troops stationed at Sacramento." The Oakland Army National Guard has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The unit was first organized in 1852 as the 1st Infantry Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry. In 1898, the regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment and then the 4th Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment. The battalion served in World War II as part of the U.S. Ninth Infantry Division and fought in Europe and Asia. After World War II, the regiment was disbanded in 1951 and its members were reorganized into two battalions of infantry - 1st Battalion (1951-1968) and 2nd Battalion (1968-present).
