Oakland, California was founded on October 16, 1847 by Captain George Morrison and Major James B. Candler as the Town of Oakland. The site that would become Oakland had been chosen because it was near a large brackish lake called Alameda Creek. On December 12, 1849, the town's first meeting was held at the old Mission San Carlos de Tolosa chapel and consisted of only 26 people. The first mayor of Oakland was James McMillan. The city's first store opened in 1850, and in 1854 the first post office was established at 10th Street and Telegraph Avenue. In 1865 an oil well were drilled in what is now Downtown Oakland and began to produce natural gas which gave rise to the name "Gaslight Alley" for this area around Lake Merritt. In 1870–71 a fire destroyed much of downtown Oakland but due to donations from citizens many new stores were built including the First National Bank building which still stands today on Broad Street near High Street. In 1906 downtown Oakland burned down after a night of heavy rain which caused extensive damage to buildings such as City Hall and other important landmarks such as The Regent Theater where movies were often shown before WW I started. It wasn't until 1975 when restoration work began on these structures which resulted in their return to business as Oakland's original downtown district A major redevelopment project took place during the late 1990s known as "The Summit" Project which created two districts – Downtown Eastside and Central Park West – within city limits with mixed-income housing, public transportation options, commercial corridors and cultural venues located therein
