Oakland's coffee history goes back to 1892 when two German immigrants, Johann David Engel and Wilhelm Kuhl, opened a cafe on Broadway in the heart of the city. The Engel brothers were influenced by cafes in Berlin and started brewing their own coffee in 1895. In 1916, they moved to 24th Street and became known as Oakland's first Italian cafe. In 1924, the Engel family sold the cafe to Armenian American businessman George Hovannisian who renamed it "The Haggar". In 1938, America's first Turkish café opened in Oakland at 12th and Broadway. The Haggar served up Turkish coffee from small cups that customers could pick up at the counter. The café was eventually closed down due to World War II; however, its legacy lives on today as one of Oakland's most popular tourist destinations for Turkish cuisine! In 1979, entrepreneur DonatellO Liberti purchased the Haggar Cafe from Hovannisian and reopened it as "DonatellO". He changed its name to "DonatellO's Pizza" after his son-in-law John Travolta starred in a movie based on DonatellO's life story. After years of growth and success, DonatellO decided to sell his business in 2001 to Italian restaurant chain Albergo Roma. Since then, Oakland has seen a influx of new businesses specializing in ethnic cuisine - many of which have continued to thrive even after relocating away from downtown Oakland. Oakland was founded on October 1, 1847 by Captain James Fenton as etching Station No. 4 on what becameameda Creek. In 1853, it became an independent town under the name of Alameda. On February 25, 1868, Oakland merged with Contra Costa County to become a single county with its own government and residents. The last time Oakland had a mayor was Willie Brown who served from December 15, 2003 to January 17, 2007. The City of Berkeley had been located within Contra Costa County since 1906 when it was annexed into the county as part of larger plans to build berths for ships on Richmond Peninsulairted by Berkeley and Albany Streets between Peralta Street and Point Reyes Boulevard. When Pittsburg/Bayview Avenue (now Interstate 580) was realigned in 1958 near where I-580 exits I-880 eastbound at MacArthur Road (now MacArthur Boulevard), Highway 27 passed through Berkeley along Pittsburg/Bayview Avenue before crossing I-880 at milepost 169 just south of Woodstock Road (now Barton Road). At that point I-280 divided Berkeley from Oakland; however highway 27 followed BART tracks past University Avenue into downtownBerkeley while I-280 continued east past Madison Street into Oaklands Central Business District (CBSD). In 1984 Measure EE , which would have annexationzoned unincorporated areas north of Interstate 280widened I-880 from MacArthur Boulevard south to Candlestick Park; however this proposal failed due to opposition from then Mayor Dianne Feinstein In 1999, following newly appointed Director Douglas Brinkley's announcement that he would review local services provided by Hearst Corporation's television networks—a move intended to reduce state funding for government contracts—Hearst Corporation withdrew its application for funding for two new channels on KCAL–TV and KFMB–TV . From then until his resignation effective December 31 2000 Heriberto Castilla assumed direct management of bothKCAL–TV and KFMB–TV . He also established new programming restrictions which were not overturned until after he retired effective March 14 2003 Heather Donohue succeeded Castilla as Director during her first term on November 3 2002 On May 5 2004 former State Senator Don Perata became Acting Mayor after John Liu resigned over his support of Proposition 13 When Liu reentered politics later that year Perata appointed him Vice President for Community Affairs Donahue left office on August 29 2006 becoming Deputy City Administrator In early 2007 Rebecca Kaplan replaced Donahue as Deputy City Administrator
