In May 1942 the wing relocated again to RAF Whiteriver near Seattle Washington Territory in order to support Pacific Theater operations during World War II. Oakley, California is a city located in Central California. The population was 34,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Porter County, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oakley has been an agricultural town since the late 1800s and its economy revolves around agriculture, ranchers and lumber production. The city's first post office opened in 1898. There are many small businesses and services which serve the community; these include a grocery store, mechanic shop, hair salon, tire store and several restaurants. In downtown Oakley there are several blocks of retail storefronts as well as two large banks - First National Bank and Peoples State Bank - as well as over 20 small businesses that provide nearly all of the services needed by residents. The history of Oakley goes back to 1887 when Waddell Cranch ran a cattle ranch in what is now east downtown Oakley with help from George Atherton. After some time Waddell sold his land to Jens Jensen for $2 per acre (0.75 km²). From this initial beginning, Oakleys story has been one full of growth and progress: new housing developments were built throughout the years until annexation into Fresno in 1970; industry moved out; jobs moved up; schools operated on a day-to-day basis until they closed during World War II due to lack of funding; development continued until annexation into Porter County occurred in 1970 followed by rapid growth once it did. Oakley is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the banks of the Kern River. The population was 1,463 at the 2010 census. Oakley is an agricultural community and has a history of being a center for citrus production. The town was founded in 1879 by John Smeaton and his brother-in-law Owen O'Neill as "Smeatonville" after they purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of Rancho San Luis Obispo from Manuel Nieto. The first post office was established in 1880. In 1886, Smeatonville became part of the City of Bakersfield when it was combined with other nearby towns to form the Kern Valley city government. The name change came about because early settlers thought that if they called their community "Oakley," then people would think they were near Yosemite National Park. In 1907, Oakley incorporated as a village under the guidance of mayor James J. Lynch and postmaster general Wirt Hinton Jr.. On July 25, 1912, Mayor Harry Shearer proposed to accept annexation into Bakersfield due to increasing population growth and lack of suitable land within Bakersfield limits for new developments; however, no action was taken until 1921 when an ordinance recognizingOakley's incorporation was passed by vote with two dissenting votes cast by Mayor Harry Shearer and Postmaster General Wirt Hinton Sr.. In 1916 local citizens developed what became known as "The Playground" which consisted of 3 areas: a parkland area bounded by First Street east to west; south side alley between East First Street and North Second Street; north side alley between North Second Street and West Third Street which served as playgrounds for children living in or near Oakley Village during its early years On November 25th 1922 it snowed heavily throughout most parts of Oakland creating conditions unsuitable for farming so on December 4th 1922 oakleysagriculturealliancewas formedwiththe purposeofpromotingfarmingtonroductsandfarmingutilitiesnearby . By 1923 there were 6 farms located around our village producing more than 350 acres (150 hectares) of crops including oranges In 1932 Mayor Ahern ordered all businesses closed but some reopened due to high demand from customers while others closed altogether becauseoakleyschool system had been destroyed by fire three years earlier . Operations continued through 1933 but classes were held at various locations around our village while repairs were made to school buildings By 1935 all business operations had stopped except those operated out of homes with few exceptions such as grocery stores which continued operations until 1947 when ownership changed hands again becoming part of the city
