The United States Army has a history dating back to 1775. One of the earliest units in the army was the 1st Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The battalion was organized on October 14, 1847 and served in the Mexican-American War. On November 25, 1847, at Cerritos, California, the battalion was redesignated as Company A, 1st Battalion California Volunteers Infantry Regiment. In 1851 company A relocated to Oakland and changed its name to Company D in honor of Major General David Dixon Porter who had fought for California in the war. In 1865 company D moved to San Francisco and changed its name to Company M which became part of the 5th Cavalry Division under General Order No. 2 dated January 15th 1865 In 1939 company M left Oakland for Goodyear Arizona but returned to Oakland on September 20th 1939 On February 12th 1945Company M disbanded at Goodyear due to World War II service but re-formed on July 9th 1946 when it left Goodyear again for Los Angeles The first unit that received a gift from the United States Army was Company A (1st Battalion) California Volunteers Infantry Regiment which received a rifle from Captain George Armstrong Custer who died duringbattle at Little Bighorn on April 27, 1862 . The Oakley Army National Guard was a unit of the United States Army. It was activated on September 16, 1916 as the 1st Battalion, California Infantry Regiment. Its first assignment was to provide guard duty at the Oakland Federal Building in downtown Oakland. The battalion served until World War II when it was mobilized and became part of the 9th Infantry Division. After World War II it moved to Germany where it participated in the Nuremberg Trials and later served in South Korea and Vietnam. In 1968 it transferred from active duty to reserve status and disbanded on October 31, 1972.
Oakley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Kern County and northeast of Bakersfield. Oakley sits on high ground along the course of the San Joaquin River and is surrounded by agricultural land. The first people to live in what is now Oakley were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals in their territory near present-day Livermore. In 1853, prospector George Hearn discovered gold in what would become Burbank; he named the area after his discovery - Oakley for an oak tree bearing gold coins which he found there. In 1862, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on current-day Burbank Boulevard; it became one of Northern California's most important towns because of its location near elk and deer hunting routes. The fort served as a trading post between American traders and native Californians for centuries until it was destroyed by fire in 1883. In 1893, Jerald Hodge married Emma Price; they moved to Oakley from Stockton where she had been born and raised. Emma was a teacher before becoming a businesswoman with her own school district in Stockton before moving to Fernald Park to be closer to her husband's family farmsteads (now part of Model City). They have three children: Jerald Hodge II (befriended Jurek Rubik), Pamela Hodge (married Randy Alcorn) & David Hodge (married Laura Vickers). A post office called "Oakley" was established in 1898, but discontinued operation in 1902 due to lack of customers. In 1905, William Fenton opened a grocery store at 12th Street and Richards Avenue; it became one of California's largest grocery stores until it closed its doors in 1978. The building still stands today as part of the cityscape around downtown Fresno . In 1912, developer Dutton purchased 10 acres south of town from James Waddell for $10 per acre; this site would become known as North Park Drive today . Dutton started developing the land into housing starting with single family homes beginning in 1915 . He also built schools including Elmhurst High School which opened its doors that fall . By 1923 there were over 200 houses/condos being built throughout North Park Drive alone with plans calling for more than 1000 residences by 1925 ; however those plans never came to fruition due to World War II shortages caused by rationing ↑ In 1935 renamed "Fernald Park", then "Bakersfield". After World War II ended production began again at Fernald Park but soon stopped when new technology made products more durable causing many homes not last very long ↑ In 1957 renamed "Oakley".
