In 1912, Oakley became an incorporated municipality with a population of 547 people when it amalgamated with two other towns—Tustin and Lancaster—to become one municipality called Oakley-Tustin-Lancaster Borough. The borough was dissolved in 1950 but its boundaries remain unchanged today because they are within the current borders of Kern County. In 1916, vandals destroyed several churches in Oakley including St John’s Episcopal Church which was then rebuilt under new leadership that same year. On July 4th 1916 three men were arrested for vandalizing St John’s Episcopal Church after another church within miles had been similarly damage
