Oakley, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley located just north of Fresno and east of Visalia. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. Oakley is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. In 1941, it had a population of 2,310. Today, Oakley's population is about 1,500 people and most residents are farmers and ranchers who raise livestock or grow crops. The first Europeans to visit what became Oakley were French traders in 1769-70. They named the site "Château de la Presque Rivière" after Châtelain François-Jacques d'Olivet (1681-1757), lieutenant general of France's army in North America during the War for Independence. Olivet built a fort on the east side ofpresentday Pahrump Road which he called Fort Saint Marys but never garrisoned because his supplies ran out and he could not find an opponent strong enough to stop him from taking over central California in autumn 1769/70. He left four men behind as part of his force to continue exploration southward along present day US Route 87 until they reached Tulare County on October 21, 1770 where they found goldfields worth $2 millionplus within two years! In 1851 James Fenton founded Fentonville near present day Saugus while prospecting for silver around Mokelumne Hill outside Yuba City; this location became known as Fentonville Mines . A post office was established at Fentonville on February 20th 1852 with Elisha Dickson as Postmaster General; mail service commenced on May 1st 1853 with one letter per week! Oakley is a small town in southern California, located about 25 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 4,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lancaster–LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Oakley were Spanish traders and missionaries in 1769. Jesuit Father Francisco Palou found glass beads and shells on his trip from Monterey Bay as he passed through central California. On July 20, 1838, John Capps and his party of men discovered gold in what was then known as "Las Humboldt County". The discovery led to the name change for this area from Las Humboldt County to Orange County on December 15, 1839. In 1848, James Wolkert bought land near what is now Oakley Center for Agricultural Experiment Station (now the University of Southern California) with the intent of developing it into a town. He named it after his brother-in-law Augustus Ewing who had married Wolkert's sister in 1835. In 1850, Wolkert sold most of his land to Thomas Edison for $2 million dollars which made him one of America's earliest millionaires. The first post office in Oakley was established on October 10, 1870; it was called “Avila” because its Postal Service Company president was Avila Tejo y Liberation (1811-1883), an early settler and mayor of East Los Angeles (then part of Pasadena). By 1865 there were five post offices in town: “Avila’s”, “Edison’s Rancho Seco”, “Wolkertowne”, “Frazer Park” and finally “Oakley Center” but all closed by 1880 because most people traveled by wagon or horseback rather than using mail carriers then available steamboats or cars serviceable only between Larkspur Springs and Pasadena proper. The first telephone line went up Main Street in Oakleysville on February 24th 1912() by JB Sears & Bros., a local telco company that offered services up until 1978 when it became Pacific Bell Corporation ().
