Oakley is a small town in the East Bay region of California, located about 15 miles east of San Francisco. The population was 3,684 at the 2010 census. Oakley is one of six unincorporated communities in Alameda County and it is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Oakley were Missionaries Rafael Rivera and José Ortega on June 26, 1776, who erected a small chapel near present-day Masonic Road and Mission Creek. In 1847, John Davenport founded the Davenport & Son Trading Post on Rancho Arroyo Seco which became an important center for transportation in Northern California. A post office was established at Oakleysville on March 25, 1848. In 1851, two brothers named George and Wilfred Wood opened a sawmill around current-day Main Street. In 1863 they sold the mill to Samuel Morse and his brother Alfred who operated it until 1898 when it was acquired by Wabash Railroad Company president Arthur Balfour Ellis Jr., son of Scottish immigrants Sir David Ellis (the founder of Aberdeen Angus cattle) and Lady Alice Balfour Ellis (née Cunningham). From 1898 until its sale to Pacific Telephone Company in 1962, Wabash Railway owned or leased most ofoakleysville's land including much of what is now downtown Oakland. In 1862 William Teller built a house on Farmacia Avenue which served as the first schoolhouse inOakley. By 1870 there were twelve schools inOakley with 100 students each. The company renamed itself Western Electric Corporation after merging with GE companies several months later It would be until 1978 when newly formed Oakland Community College took over operations from PCO while PCO continued operate outbuilding under different names such as Diablo Valley College before finally closing its doors completely in 2002 .
