Oakley, California is a town in Fresno County, California. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. Oakley is located on the south bank of the San Joaquin River and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Fresno. It was founded in 1882 by Mormon settlers from Utah who named it "Oakhurst." The first post office in Oakley was established in 1881, and facilities were built for the postal service there in 1885-1887. The first settler was George Atwood. In 1886, gold was found at Oakhurst and soon many people came to prospect for gold there. By 1890, over 1,000 residents had come to Oakley to work on various mining projects around the area includingclaiming land claims upriver from present-day downtown Flintridge as part of what would become known as Rancho Atwood or Gold Hill Mining District. Many other towns sprang up around this time such as Paxton (established 1888), Biggs (1890), North Oaks (1892), West Oakhurst (1904), and East Oakhurst (1910). In 1907 three men from Oregon bought 4 square miles of land adjacent to present day Downtown Flintridge for $1 an acre which they called "Flintridge Ranch" after their state home county of Oregon where they had been living since coming westward several years earlier on a cattle drive with their families. They began growing corn, peanuts and cotton on the ranch until 1912 when they sold it to local ranchers who also began raising chickens and pigs on the property that became known as Brushy Mesa Ranch after them some years later when Brushy Mesa Road ran through it. With World War I raging outside of America most people turned their attention to war efforts within American borders but few actually left their homes to fight overseas; instead those that did largely returned later with new technologies or ideas that could be put into use during wartime such as aircraft production plants like Douglas Aircraft Company's Willow Run Airport near Dayton Ohio during World War II while others like Elctal Corporation developed nuclear weapons secrets at Livermore Laboratories outside Berkeley CA during this same time period while still others set up farmsteads along side US military bases complete with irrigation systems and water wells all across southern California during this same era also known as “the Golden Age”of agriculture here in Southern California due largely to government assistance programs like Project Rice which provided seed money for farmers throughout California during the 1930s thru 1940s

After the war ended, Oakley experienced steady growth until the late 1990s when it began to experience rapid population decline due to various factors including suburbanization and economic recession. In recent years, however, Oakley has seen some resurgence with new development taking place such as a new downtown district and an expansion of its arts program which includes performances by local theater companies and concerts by local musicians.
