In 1865, John Leland Stanford founded Stanford University in Palo Alto before moving the campus to nearby Menlo Park in 1867. With new transportation connections made available through railroad lines, businesses quickly developed throughout Oakleys borders including farmland east of Redding and west of Tracy; this allowed for heavy farming during the late 1800s which contributed heavily to local economic development while also contributing significantly to social tensions that flared periodically throughout history across various regions within the United States (e.g., race vs geography).
