Oakley is a small town in the Unincorporated area of Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of Kern County and shares borders with Isabella to the south, Bakersfield to the east, and Ontario to the north. The Oakley post office opened in 1854 and closed in 1959. The first settler in what is now Oakley was John Fenton who arrived from Vermont in 1849. He platted a township called "Fenton" around 1850 and named it for his father-in-law James Fenton who had come over earlier that year from Massachusetts. In 1853, two settlers named George Waddell came across an oak tree which they thought might be able to yield fruit because it was unusual for Oaks to produce acorns during their time of year. They built a cabin near where Highway 100 crosses riverbed just east of present day Oakley center on what is now Waddell Road. In 1857, Jno Hargrave settled hereabouts also claimed by George Waddell as part of his Donation land grant from José Francisco de la Raza y Costilla gift to US President James K Polk in 1850. Hargrave did some logging but not until after he had found oil wells nearby (1902) making him one of first people associated with oil production in this area The settlement name changed several times before settling upon "Oakley" about 1907 when Alder Lumber Co., later known as American Canning Works purchased lands hereabouts including that adjoining present day Cemetery Hill which housed local farmers’ fields olives groves oliveshells etc... From 1916 until its closure circa 1951 it produced canning products made from fruits/veggies/nuts etc under contract with various Depts within USDA After years of decline due principally to fire problems resultant from intense rainfall events (1948-51), ultimately closing due mainly to engineering failures caused by inadequate masonry construction... Oakleys remaining businesses today include: Alder Lumber & Hardware Co., Bakelite Corp., Carefree Mica Tile & Millinery Supply Co., DAVIDSON ELECTRONICS COOPERATIVE (now Davidson TechnologyInc.), Dole Food Stores Incorporated (now Dole Foods Inc.)
