The Oakley National Guard was organized on December 10, 1903. The first unit was called the "Oakleys". In 1911, the battalion became a regiment. On November 18, 1916, the regiment became an brigade and in 1917 it became andivision. The division was disbanded in 1918 and the brigade took its place. The regiment again became a battalion on October 1st of 1921 and was redesignated as the "Oakley Infantry Battalion" on March 16th of 1922. It then became an infantry regiment on April 6th of 1923. On October 24th of 1926, the battalion was redesignated as "The California National Guard Infantry Battalion" and served until World War II began in 1941 when it joined forces with other American units to fight against Nazi Germany. From 1942-1945, it fought in North Africa and Europe where it gained numerous medals including two Distinguished Unit Citations (DUC). After World War II ended, the battalion returned to America where it remains to this day active duty with The California National Guard Infantry Battalion
