The city's boundaries are 17 miles east of Sacramento on the south side of the Sacramento River and 14 miles north of Stockton on the north side. Oakley features a humid subtropical climate with very hot summers and mild to cool winters. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Oakley were Spanish Missionaries who founded Rancho de los Padres in 1821. It was later called Rancho Santiago del Oro by Governor José Joaquin Mora y Herrera. In 1848, during American Civil War, General George A. Custer passed through this area on his way to battle at Bullhead Pass and noted for his cannons that can be seen today at Fort Myer in Arlington County (now part of Washington D.C.). When he withdrew from Mexico City two days later, parts of what is now Oakley were still under Mexican rule as it was then known as Rancho Santa Clara de la Cañada Blanca or "White Road" because most white people lived along it (it has since been renamed Adobe Walls). In 1861 when Californias admission into the United States required an act by Congress that named three counties - Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo - Oakleys became one with those others following annexation in 1876. The word "Oakley" originated from an early settler's name John Oldham who arrived around 1800 from Lancashire near Manchester UK aboard HMS Beagle stopped off at Juan Fernández Island between February 26th-March 2nd 1830 while exploring southern Argentina on his mapping expedition with Lieutenant James Cook Discovery Expedition which landed at Isla De La Cruz on January 12th 1830 just short journey west of modern day Mendocino County before continuing northwestward along today's coastline to Cuyamaca Harbor where they anchored some 10 nautical miles southwest Sunday next year about 20 leagues southeast longitude latitude 19 degrees 55 minutes east longitude or about 25 miles WNW longitude portage point for goods entering Point Reyes National Seashore via Strait Of Magellan

The town has been located on the east side of the mountain since its founding. The community currently has a population of about 350 people, making it one of the smallest towns in California. Oakley was born in Ocala, Florida in 1821 and immigrated to California with his family in 1852 when he was just thirteen years old. He worked as a farmhand for three years before starting his own farm near present-day Auburn, California. In1859, Oakley married Martha Ann and they moved to what is now part of downtown Oakland from their original farmstead on Redwood Boulevard southeast ofpresent-day Hayward (now part of Berkeley). The couple raised five children: John F., Mary Jane (Minnie), Alice (Alma), Bruce (Brigitte), and Linda (Linda). In 1861, Oakleys ranch was destroyed by fire which killed most of his family but not him due to his quick action at the scene. Twelve years later he again lost everything when gold was discovered nearby at Sutter's Mill so he turned to farming once again though this time with a more focused strategy on growing crops that could be shipped upriver for processing into coins or jewelry
