However, that donation didn't come until after years of struggles from the Oakley community to get their hands on a vessel. The first Navy ship donation toOakley came about sixty-six years earlier when Commodore John D. Stockton decided to donate his flagship, the USS San Francisco (1898). This donation helped bring much-needed relief and comfort toOakleysince her sinking during World War I had left them homeless. The San Francisco wasn't the only navy ship DonationtoOakley; there were also two destroyers which served as Harbor Defense Ships for Oakland from 1942-1945. These ships played an important role in keeping Oakland safe from Japanese forces during World War II. After the war, these ships were sold and given away to other communities throughout California. In 1978,the Navy gifted another vessel to Oakleysince they donated the USS Constitution (1914). This gift was very much appreciated by residents of Oakleysince she had been used as a training vessel for local law enforcement officers for many years before being retired in 1977. This donation made it possible forOakleysince she could be used as part of Naval Park opened in 1984 which now includes both her old hulk and new deck house on Jackson Street near Broadway Avenue. Over time, the couple added other items to their navy gift collection including a watch in 1974 and a key ring in 1984. The Jenssen's continued to give back to the community by donating proceeds from their sales of watches and key rings to local organizations such as the Rotary Club, SPCA and First United Methodist Church. In 2006, they decided to donate all proceeds from their sale of watches and keyrings to charity once again. This time, it was the Navy League of America which received $10,000 from the couple.
Oakley, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County and portions of Stanislaus and Inyo counties. Oakley was platted in 1887 by J.C. Richardson as an agricultural community on the east side ofranch called White Oak Flat. A post office was established there in 1888, and the name changed to Oakley in 1903 when it became part of Kern County. A mill was built there in 1912 and operated until 1971; its remains are now a part of the municipal facility. The modern-day town began to be developed around World War II munitions production; today, most manufacturing takes place within or near Highway 395, which bisects it north-south along its eastern edge. The principal economic activity is agriculture (primarily grapes), with some light industry scattered throughout the core area; oakley bars are a majorstay for many residents

In 1932,Captain John Sutter's grandson made his home in Oakley after years living in Stockton. His name is James Hargrave Sutter II and he has been active in local politics since then having served as mayor twice and as chair of the city council four times.
