Oakley is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Oakley's police department has been providing law enforcement services for the community since 1903. The first policeman to be employed by the town was Charles Hickey in 1903. Other policemen who have served on the force include: Edward J. Purdy (1915-1920), Arthur Worthy (1920-1925), Harry Swayne (1927-1939), John Ahern (1945-1950), and Clifford Hickey (1975-1997). The current officer corps includes 11 officers with over 50 years of service between them. In addition to its law enforcement functions, Oakley also hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration that draws locals and visitors from all over Southern California together to enjoy music, games, food and fireworks while enjoying access to all that Oakley has to offer including a library and museum as well as downtown shopping and dining opportunities.

It is the smallest city in Marin County by population and the second-smallest city by land area. Oakley's economy is based on timber and agriculture. The first people to live in what is now Oakley were Anglo-Russian traders who came to Northern California during the 18th century looking for fur trappers and missionaries who had brought Christianity to Russia. In 1853, John Fitch built his mill on what would become North Main Street. Fitch's mill became a model for many mills built throughout Northern California until it burned down in 1917. The town of San Rafael grew up around Fitch's mill; much of this development still exists today as part of South San Rafael annexed into Oakley in 1922. In 1916, an American Oil Company oil well was drilled onshore near present-day Ascot and Rancho Seco; however, production ceased due to pollution from the well within a year. This event helped spur development in nearby Ascot where oil companies began drilling again starting in 1923 with Shell Oil Company’s first wells (now Chevron) . As early as 1933 local farmers started marketing their hay crops through cooperative Extension Service ranches which continue today as part of Brown Agricultural Marketing District #1

Oakley is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the western edge of the Inland Empire and borders San Bernardino to the south and east, Lodi to the north, and Palmdale to the west. The population was 5,758 at the 2010 census. The first known appearance of Oakley was as an agricultural community on May 25, 1873 when Wm. Fenton bought land from Juan Bautista de Anza for $8 per acre. A post office called Anza was established in 1876, but no mail reached it until 1886. The name may be derived from "oak," an old Spanish word meaning "safe place." Oakley became a city in 1957 when it merged with nearby Lancaster. The merger created a new city government which continued to operate under that name until 1974 when it changed its name to Oakley City Limits after joining MLS (Major League Soccer). The current City Manager is Dan Scarpa. Oakley's history can be traced back to 1850 when Joshua Raymond built a adobe Rancho Los Olivos near what is now downtown Oakley. He named his rancho after General James O'Connell who had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War and helped found Orange County. At some point between 1867 and 1870, John Sutter came through southern Kern County visiting Joshua Raymond's rancho and acquired some ofJoshua's male stock which he used as part of his cattle drive down Interstate 10 into northern Arizona Territory where he founded Sutterville about nine miles northeast of present day Oxnard Mills in Ventura County; this village served as both our town center and social center for many years before regional growth took over development once again in recent decades primarily due to adjacent Ventura County annexation by Los Angeles proper notwithstanding efforts by successive mayors elected at large or appointed locally including Scarpa himself since taking office on Jan 1st 2020 despite opposition expressed hereinto by portions of our citizens represented therein duly elected at last meeting thereof held March 14th 2019 pursuant thereto calling themselves “the Opposition”)
