Oakley, California is a small town located in the Santa Clara Valley of southern California. The population was 9,534 at the 2000 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakley-Los Gatos- Mountain View, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oakley is known for its large and well-preserved oak trees and for its annual Apple Blossom Festival which attracts over 100,000 people. The land that now makes up Oakley was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. There are several stories about how this area got its name: one says that an Indian named Oka found aoak tree while exploring his new homeland; another story has it that two men named John erected a post on what is now Main Street to sell goods they had collected in their travels around Sonoma County. In 1853, when Northern Pacific Railway built its line through Santa Clara County, they began construction on what would become the tracks leading toOakley. The town site was chosen because itaddy close to water supply and because there were few other buildings in use at the time. The first buildings were log cabins built by some of the early settler’s families during the late 1800s and early 1900s (the oldest still standing is “Hickory House”). When World War I started, many local farmers enlisted in military service and took up arms against Germany or Austria; as a result, many of these homes were left with materials from destroyed houses still inside them (this phenomenon also occurs today among pre-war era artifacts).
