Oceanside is an incorporated city located in San Diego County, California on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, its population was 86,623. The city is named after Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and it was founded by Captain George Hearst in 1853 as a small settlement on a site now bounded by Imperial Street and Harbor Boulevard. The first post office opened in 1854. In 1870, Oceanside became part of what was then called the City of San Diego and it annexed portions of Rancho Santa Fe de Alisal in 1902. Today, most Oceanside residents are affiliated with one or more churches or religious organizations. Oceanside has many cultural attractions, including two major annual events: the Pacific Beach Folk Festival and the OC Weekly Music Festival. In 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered his forces to disband and all military equipment was melted down. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9268 which authorized Americans to send gifts to members of other nations's militaries as part of victory or peace celebrations. This order was later changed to prohibit sending gifts during World War II because it became evident that war could be profitable for generals and businessmen. After World War II ended, many people started expecting gifts from armies again and in 1949, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 12938 which allowed American citizens to send gifts to foreign militaries on special occasions such as National Day or Victory Day. In 1951, President Dwight Eisenhower issued Executive Order 13563 which made it easier for Americans to purchase items sent by foreign militaries in support of United States troops fighting in conflicts around the world. Since then, there have been many changes to how armies are presented at Christmas time including allowing soldiers' families access to gifts once they have been released from service or being decommissioned from the army altogether (e.g., Army brides). Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 63,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad–San Marcos metropolitan area. Oceanside has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and experienced its first European contact in 1821 when USS Constitution sailed into the harbor to trade with Mexican traders. In 1846, an American army led by General John C. Fremont sacked and burned Oceanside after capturing it from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Afterward, ranching began to take hold in what would become Oceanside and shipbuilding became important as early as 1912 when ships were built at Pier 35 on North Harbor Street using local materials brought in from Yerba Buena Cove on Carlsbad Bay. The port of Oceanside grew rapidly following World War II as shipping became more important than ever before in the postwar years; however, because of environmental concerns about oil spills caused by ship traffic and other activities in the bay, federal regulation of maritime traffic began to increase significantly in the early 1970s. This increased regulation had a significant impact on jobs and business opportunities for both companies and individuals who operated within reach of new Coast Guard regulations that applied only to vessels engaged in commercial fishing or sealife hunting operations; these activities were not subject to regulatory control under previous U.S.-Mexico mercantilist policies which had allowed unrestricted shipping along coastal coasts without regard to their effects on environment or human populations distant from ports. In response to this growingregulation environment, many small businesses closed up shop while others struggled through difficult times; nevertheless, some giants made it through: Altec Lansing Inc., founded 1957 (later acquired by Philips Electronics); Toyota Motors America Inc.; Adobe Systems Inc.; Whirlpool Corporation (formerly Stonington Sheet Metal Works LP) which merged with Bel Kasten & Company (now Mercury Marine) 1985; ITT Corporation which merged with Time Warner 1984). On October 28, 1821, a group of Spanish American Marines under the command of Captain José de la Peña landed on what is now Oceanside in Monterey County. The marines were looking for an uninhabited island to establish a naval station and found it while scouting the area. The first European to visit the site was Pedro Fortunato Saenz, who called it Isla San Antonio. In 1824, a smallpox epidemic hit California and some of the Marines decided to build their own quarantine house on the island in order to prevent the spread of disease. The first school in Oceanside was started in 1827 by Mrs. Jane Goodall and Rev. James Mclntyre. A Presbyterian church was built in 1828 by Mr. John Bogue as well. In 1850, there were around 100 people living on Isla San Antonio when a fire destroyed most of the buildings on it including most of the Marines' quarantining house which became known as "the Infirmary." In 1865, during America's Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit invaded California and discovered that many Californians were sympathizing with Confederate forces. This caused great anger among many local residents who saw this as an attack on their way of life and Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado ordered all white men over 16 years old to leave within 24 hours or be deported back to Mexico City without food or shelter. The only exemptions were those who could provide produce or livestock for local marketplaces where goods would be sold at low prices due to lack of competition from nearby townships with more spacious homes and better infrastructure. Over 2,000 men did not leave because they had either family or friends back home in California; these men are known collectively as "The Hooligans." Aftermath: After General Custer's death at Battle of Little Big Horn in 1886 many Californians began feeling resentment towards their federal government and its policies such as discrimination against Mexican Americans even though most Californians did not support secession from United States (eventually becoming part of Mexico). On July 14th 1861 Proposition 8 was passed by vote majority through state legislatures nullifying any laws previously passed authorizing slavery within California (a move which helped precipitate American Civil War). This led directly to war between Ulysses S Grant’s Union army occupying Southern California against Confederacy forces under General Robert E Lee which ultimately led to victory for Grant over Lee at Appomattox Court House thereby ending Reconstruction era in America
