In 1947, Congress passed legislation authorizing Departmental Headquarters to establish Gift shops within each branch of the Service so that members could purchase items related to their duties ashore or afloat. In addition to its combat actions during World War II, the Coast Guard also played an important role in saving millions of people from dangers on our land through lifesaving demonstrations and education initiatives such as Sailing for Schools program which provided instruction on ocean navigation skills to elementary school students throughout America. Since independence day in 1776 until today’s date in 2020, almost 3 centuries has elapsed since our inception! And while we have made great strides during that time period – such as increasing efficiency and capability – there are still some areas where we need your help! For example, we continue to face challenges like climate change which is causing unprecedented [economic] hardships for coastal communities all around America; however our fleet continues grow each year making us even better equipped to handle these types of incidents; however more money is not always enough so we need your support too!
