In 1887, Oceanside was founded by two Italians who were working on a ship that would transport goods between the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Cruz. The founders, Antonio and Angelo Colletti, named their town after the Spanish word for "ocean," "oces." The first coffee crop in Oceanside was grown in 1908 and beans were roasted on the shipyards until 1945. In 1951, Bob's Coffee opened its doors as the first grocery store in Oceanside. The first European settler in what would become OC was José Altamirano who arrived ashore on December 12th 1824 aboard HMS Primrose under Captain John Mason after sailing from Spain.[3] A year later Juan Bautista Pico de la Garza landed his vessel Santa Margarita on shore at what is now Yacht Harbor Boulevard including today's State Pier 8 across from City Hall which served as both an landing area for vessels arriving during early days ashore when only moorings could be obtained alongshore,[4] precursor to present day Old Coast Guard House Museum which still occupies part of downtown waterfront parkland.[5][6][7][8][9] On October 30th 1825 another group led by Fernando Rivera y Lopez arrived at anchor off shore - this time disembarking all their goods with only three men - they were quickly joined by Alonso Ramos who set up shop nearby soon becoming well known within town for his fresh seafood items which he transported daily from Point Loma aboard shipmates' pinnaces into town]) For about 15 years no new arrivals occurred until Mexican immigrants started flowing into OC during The Gold Rush era starting around 1850 when maritime transportation became available due primarily to increased trade between Mexico City and San Francisco through newly completed railroads connecting those cities making smuggling much less risky given existing security measures preventing access inland especially among rival gangs active along coastlines societal attitudes had shifted awayfrom openolasa tionist golden age towards appreciationofnativecultures

On January 14, 1821, Captain George Vancouver sailed from San Francisco with his Expedition to become the first Europeans to set foot on what is now known as California. The men of the expedition were: Vancouver, John Meares, and James Cook. They reached Point Lobos on December 17, 1821. The group then continued up the coast to Santa Clara Valley before finally reaching Monterey Bay on February 15, 1824. In 1825-26, a group of Mexicans led by José Joaquín de Arguelles explored the Casa del Encanto area of Oceanside. This was important because it helped initiate the Gold Rush in California. On May 7th of that year General Antonio López y Costilla arrived in Oceanside with an army looking for gold mines in Eastern County and he named it after himself: Los Angeles County was created on November 16th of that year by order of Governor Manuel Nieto. In 1849-50 Juana Margarita Ziegler founded a school here which became famous as La Academia de la Salud (The Academy of Health).
