On December 21, 1860, the US government purchased land at Ando Beach on the Pacific Ocean for $5,000. On July 24, 1863, the first permanent settlers arrived in Oceanside. The town was named after Captain John A. Roebuck of USS Constitution and his family. The first post office was established in 1865. In 1868, a school was built to serve the new arrivals. By 1870, there were 10 residents and 2 businesses in Oceanside. In 1872, a grain elevator was built to process wheat from local farms into flour and other goods for sale in San Diego and Imperial counties. By 1886, there were 25 residents and 5 businesses in Oceanside. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed most of downtown San Diego but did not damage Oceanside; it remained largely unharmed until 1946 when an air raid destroyed much of the town center including its Grain Elevator which stood until 1954 when it was rebuilt as part of an airport expansion project
