Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,291 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Diego County and second-most populous city in all of California after Los Angeles. Oceanside is located on the Pacific Ocean about 25 miles south of downtown San Diego. The first Europeans to visit Oceanside were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Gaspar de Portolà on their way from Mexico City to Monterey Bay in November 1542. They named the bay "oceanus" because it looked like an open ocean when they saw it from land. In 1602, Sebastián Vizcaino reported that he could see "a great number of ships at anchor in this sea". A wharf was built at what is now East Beach Road and Mission Trails Boulevard, making Oceanside one of the first towns on the West Coast of America. At that time there were few permanent residents other than sailors and fishermen; many people came and went during each year's transient waves of arrivals and departures. In 1821, Captain John Sutter discovered gold near Point Loma while exploring for a route to Sacramento through northern California; he named his discovery "Sutter’s Fort" after him. With access to Mexican land via Rancho Santa Fe (later part of Imperial Valley), Sutter soon became one of the richest men on Earth with his discoveries – until his death three years later at age 48 without leaving any children behind to continue his fortune. For a time Commodore John Doolittle supplied Navy warships with coal from Sutter's mines; but by 1942 most mine supplies had been exhausted and World War II began without their consent or knowledge1 On July 1st 1915 Otto Koester founded Kaiser Wilhelmstraße Brewing Company which became world famous for being one of the very first breweries opened under state regulation by private individuals2 . The brewery complex still stands today across from I-5 just east of North Park Drive/the old North Park Shopping Center - currently used as office space by Kaiser Wilhelmstraße Brewery LLC3 . Another early commercial outpost was The Grapes store started by George Wirtz4 who developed Wirtz Gardens southeast corner Main Street between Broadway & Seventh Avenue where Obispo Elementary School now stands5 . The first European to sight and map San Diego Bay was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1542. In 1821, Captain John T. Blyth founded the town of Oceanside on land that had been purchased from Mission Santa Clara de Asís by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for $5,000. A post office called Oceanside was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1959. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 382 square miles (1,021 square kilometers). Of this area, 377 square miles (1,020 square kilometers) is land and 6 square miles (16 square kilometers) (3 percent) is water. The City of Oceanside grew up around its military installations during World War II: Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay which were both constructed on what are now Hearst Ranch State Park areas east of Main Street and south of Don Pedro Beach Boulevard today's portions of Harbor Drive between those two sites became part of downtown when they were annexed into the city limits during 1949; as well as Marine Corps Base Coronado which was built adjacent to present-day NAS El Centro on Carlsbad Mesa between 1942 and 1945 following World War II bombing raids over San Diego that destroyed large parts of downtown including much then-new naval housing developments built near NAS Whiting Field also withinmarine base boundaries; these airfields were eventually closed down with all but Kaneohe Bay being transferred to Navy custody after 1946 while Naval Air Station North Island reverted back to Army control with most remaining facilities becoming Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton through 1972 control change from Navy to Marines).
