The Oceanside Naval Shipyard is a commercial shipyard in Oceanside, California. It was founded in 1944 by Admiral James J. Conant and is the oldest naval shipyard in the United States. The yard has built over 1,000 navy ships, including USS Constitution (the first American warship to be constructed at the yard), USS Enterprise (the first nuclear-powered navy ship), and HMS Sandwich. The yard also builds Landing Ships/Mechanized Assault Vessels (LMSAs), large amphibious ships, and maritime patrol aircraft carriers. The Navy's decommissioning program for USS John F Kennedy began on October 8, 1988 with ceremonies at the yards' Dry Dock 5 site. On November 10, 1988 the last of six Nimitz-class nuclear-powered attack submarines that were being built at the dry dock site were delivered to Newport News Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Virginia for scrapping. The USS Oceanside was a United States Navy ship that served in World War II. The USS Oceanside was built at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Stockton, California. She was launched on May 2, 1943, and served as part of the Pacific Fleet during the war. The USS Oceanside was decommissioned on September 15, 1946, and she was sold to the Japanese navy on October 1, 1946. She served as an auxiliary cruiser until she was sunk by a mine off Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
Ocean City is a small town in southwestern California, located on the Pacific Ocean. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is an unincorporated area of San Diego County. The town began as a trading post on the present-day site of Oceanside in 1887. The first store and post office in Ocean City were built by J.B.
