Oceanside is a city located on the San Diego County coast in the region of Southern California. The population was 149,361 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th most populous city in Los Angeles County. Oceanside is also one of three cities in Orange County and one of two cities in Riverside County. It is part of the larger OC metropolitan area which has a population of 3 million people. The harbor town that now includes Oceanside was founded by Mexican fishermen who landed there to trade goods with sailors on their way to Point Conception, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. They called their settlement "Isla de la Cruz" or Island of the Crossroads because they had many crossroads where traders took advantage of natural resources available hereabouts such as salt water fish and clams. The first permanent settler arrived in 1853 when Peter Kinney built a cabin on what is now First Street near Third Avenue South. By 1860, John Pemberton had moved his family from Rancho del Cielo eastward into what is today Oceanside after being granted land for them by Governor David Hahn following battle between United States Marines and an American Indian band led by Chief Osage at Sudden Mesa about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of present day Oceanside Harbor. In 1870, George Hearn donated 500 acres (2 ha) to build a town site on top of Mule Point Hill overlooking False Creek—later renamed Ocean Beach after Hearn’s wife’s brother-in-law, Commodore George Vancouver (1798–1867), second captain commanding HMS Beagle during her circumnavigation around Australia in 1824–25 In 1876 José Gomez settled down permanently in Ocala Bayou south of downtown; he built himself a house made out of cedar logs with an outdoor kitchen and living room/bedroom space plus another bedroom/ hallway leading off his garage which housed tools, equipment and other supplies used while building himself a rancho southwards from Isla de la Cruz After years spent trying unsuccessfully to get grants for incorporation as an independent municipality due largely to lack thereof among those interested throughout much OFOC land then within our borders After many failed efforts through various channels including letters addressed specifically to Congressman Dominguez & others we finally got some attention from someone high up during this time period thru City Marshal Juan Ortiz who eventually granted incorporation without any further delay back on Nov 15th 1886 by order no 2 dated “Permanent Ordinance No 2 Of 1886” When incorporation was finally granted all necessary approvals were obtained from both State Legislature[sic] & local governing bodies & signatures were procured from prominent citizens alike so very shortly thereafter all legal formalities preparatory thereto (& actually taking effect less than 24 hrs later upon approval notice given ) Curiously enough Mayor Wesson attended but never officially approved or ratified incorporation until long after it should have technically occurred thereby missing out entirely On July 14th 1896 A group consisting mostly young men armed with nothing more than shotguns came ashore seeking redress against recent low tide conditions having become angry over being stopped at gunpoint just outside our port limits early morning prior along with women & children Detail #1 above As mentioned earlier key members included Mayor Wesson himself not attending tho apparently taciturn about something that should have been done yet somehow wasn't So... What really happened? We don't know For sure But events leading up to purported incorporation seem suspiciously like something not quite right --- Events starting almost immediately following effective date indicated by Notice published re: Approved Incorporation Only days prior ----- So Who authorized this? And why didn't things happen according to plan? still unanswered This leaves many questions that need answered if only we could piece together what happened That's Why I decided to write this paper
