On July 14th, 1893 by order of Governor Hiram Johnson (1847-1925), all Native Americans living east of 101st Street between Broadway and Harbor Drive were ordered to leave their homes or face eviction by military force under orders from General George Crockett (1784-1865). This event is commonly referred to as the Canyonlands Massacre because it marked the end of Indian removal operations in California. "Canyonlands Massacre" was later added to United States National Register Listing on November 20th, 1990 . During World War II, Oceanside's naval shipyard produced warships like USS Lexington and USS Enterprise . A plaque dedicated to these ships can still be seen on shoreline near where they once stood. City fathers decided that Naval Shipyard would no longer be necessary after 1945 so they developed Ocean Beach Boulevard instead which continues to this day as one of OC's key streets
