The first documented use of this suffix -ville occurred in 1887 when Oceanside adopted a town charter under the name Sailsbury Beach. According to historical records, Oceanside was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on July 29, 1542 as Rancho Pastoria de las Pulgas (present-day Rancho San Pedro). He and his family built a small adobe house near present-day Point Loma while they traveled up what is now known as Coast Highway 1 searching for land suitable for ranching. They named their new settlement after Punta del Diablo (the peak of Point Loma), which is located about south of where they lived. On October 11, 1692 alcalde Alonso Hernandez granted Donation Land comprising an area bounded by First Street on the north and Second Street on the south; including all that now constitutes Point Loma Harbor; also included all that then constituted Santa Margarita Island." From 1692 until 1854 Los Angeles County was part of Alta California Colony which administered much of Southern Californias coastline from Monterey Bay to Baja Peninsula
