In 1850, following the Mexican–American War, Mexico ceded all of Alta California to America through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 4, 1848, California became a U.S. state when it was admitted into the United States as a result of the American Civil War. Ontario became an incorporated town on October 25, 1850.
