The history of the army in Ontario, California goes back to 1853. The first military unit to arrive in what is now California was company A, 2nd Battalion, Sacramento Infantry. Company A was organized on December 9th, 1853 at Fort Yuma and left for San Francisco on January 6th, 1854. They arrived at Sutter's Fort on January 14th and were quartered there until May 8th when they moved into a new camp called Beale's Station. On May 8th the battalion made their first attack against the Mexican forces at Los Banos Hill near present day Alpine. The battalion had only six men but fought with determination and achieved significant results. On July 5th a detachment of company A crossed the Kern River and attacked a detachment of Mexican troops under General Manuel Nieto at Cerro Gordo Heights. After three hours of fierce fightingcompany A finally took control of the heights and drove the Mexicans away without loss to themselves or their own troops. In October 1854 company A underwent another reorganization when it was redesignated as 3rd Battalion, Sacramento Infantry Regiment (the "Sacramento Guards"). The regiment left for various engagements throughout Northern California before being mustered out of service in March 1865 at Stockton. After leaving service company A reorganized again on April 1st 1865 as 4th Battalion, Sacramento Infantry Regiment (the "Sacramento Rifles"). The regiment served with distinction during the American Civil War between 1861-1865 before being disbanded on September 30th 1865 at Stockton by order of United States President Abraham Lincoln due to its role in that conflict. The army gift history of 4th Battalion, Sacramento Infantry Regiment can be traced back to 1861 when it became part of Union Army units stationed in Northern California after being originally organized as 3rd Battalion, Sacramento Infantry Regiment (the "Sacramento Guards").Following participation in the American Civil War this battalion also received additional honors including being mentioned in dispatches five times during its eight year career including one time for bravery under fire while attacking enemy positions from cover! In total 12 soldiers from 4/SAR died while serving our country which is an amazing statistic considering how often combat played a role within their lives! After disbanding this unit also receivedappropriate awards such as two gold stars for heroism! This battalion ultimately did not serve overseas however it still holds many unique historicalLegacy items like two gold stars awarded posthumously!
