Ontario, California is located in Northern California, just east of the Oregon border. It was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The area now known as Ontario was part of present-day Sacramento County until 1850 when it was transferred to Los Angeles County. In 1853, a group of European Americans led by José Cornelius Washington founded what became known as the Dominguez Rancho San Bernardino de la Palma y Arcadia and this rancho had a large land grant from Mexican President Vicente Guerrero. This rancho formed the nucleus around which later settlements were made in northwestern California. The original town site at Ontario was chosen by General James K. Polk during his visit to Western America in 1849 as a stop on his route from Sacramento to Oceanside after his victory over Mexico at Adobe Hills on November 16 that year. In addition to its strategic location for trade and transportation, Ontario also became an important center of government because it lay along both railroads connecting Southern California with northern Bakersfield and Visalia and with central Los Angeles through Orange County. The town gradually grew into a small but burgeoning community, hosting industries such as tanning, cattle herding, farming, lumbering, mining and manufacturing before joining what is now Riverside County in 1912 when that county was created from parts of Orange and Riverside counties
