The first commercially roasted small batch coffee was made in 1968 by Joe's Coffee Company, which was founded by Joe Franklin and his brother-in-law Don Freeman. The company began selling its coffee direct to consumers in San Francisco and other cities across the Bay Area. By the early 1970s, small batch coffee had spread to other parts of California as well. In 1972,Joe's Coffee Company introduced its world famous Kona line of espresso drinks made with smallbatch coffees from its Pacheco Hills beans. The city received extensive damage from bombing raids by The USSB; however, its economy remained largely unaffected.
