In Ontario, California, small batch coffee was first pioneered in the early 1960s by a group of farmers who grew coffee in the Pacheco Hills area of San Francisco. The farmers started small, growing just two or three plants and selling their coffee directly to consumers. The first commercially roasted small batch coffee was made in 1968 by Joe's Coffee Company, which was founded by Joe Franklin and his brother-in-law Don Freeman. The company began selling its coffee direct to consumers in San Francisco and other cities across the Bay Area. By the early 1970s, small batch coffee had spread to other parts of California as well. In 1972,Joe's Coffee Company introduced its world famous Kona line of espresso drinks made with smallbatch coffees from its Pacheco Hills beans. And in 1978, they opened their first cafe in Oakland (the precursor to today's Ben & Jerry's). Since then, many other companies have followed Joe's Coffee Company into the production of small batch coffee products. Some notable names include Bob Evans Tea Services (now part of Starbucks), Maxwell House Coffee Roasters (now Peet’s Coffee), Blue Bottle Coffee Co., Four Barrel Brewing Co., and Stumptown Organic Brewing Co..

In 1979, when Statistics Canada ceased publishing censuses in British Columbia,[1] Ontario became again an unincorporated area within British Columbia.[2] As such it remains one of Canadan provinces with no effective municipal government aside from its statistical data collection activities undertaken by Canadian authorities at Statistics CANSTAT."

After Confederation, Liberal Premier David Lloyd Wilson took office in 1949 and began Agenda 21 which aimed at creating a single council devoted to sustainable development across all levels of government with a view towards achieving world self-reliance
