The town of Orange Cove is located in Inyo County, California, about an hour and a half drive east of Los Angeles. The population was 3,492 at the 2010 census. Its ZIP code is 81822. Orange Cove was founded in 1859 by Captain John C. Fremont and his wife Caroline Bayles Fremont as a Mormon settlement on Rancho Santa Anita. It became an independent city in 1922 when it joined the larger city of Los Angeles. The city has since become one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations; according to the 2016 US Census, Orange Cove had a population of 494 people living in 166 households and had a median household income of $86,724 (the top 5% had the highest incomes). The economy depends largely on agriculture: citrus crops are grown for juice, oilseed meal and other products, while almonds are also produced. The process involved sending luggage containing personal belongings along with identification cards detailing each individual’s name etc., all neatly packed inside plywood crates! Needlessto say it took some time but ultimately resulted in many happy memories for those involved!
On July 20, 1947, the Air Force purchased an up-to-date Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber. This aircraft would be known as the "Aircraft of the Future." This purchase marked the beginning of a long and successful relationship between the Air Force and Boeing. Orange Cove is located in the eastern Mojave Desert, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles. The cove was first settled by pioneers in 1853 and became a thriving citrus town. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1907, but it re-emerged as a small agricultural community until after World War II when the industry moved to nearby Lancaster County. After the war, Orange Cove slowly lost its commercial importance and changed hands several times before it became part of the city of Indio in 1984. Today, Orange Cove is an unincorporated community with a population of around 100 people. The first European settlement at Orange Cove was made by Captain George Vancouver on September 24, 1769 while he was leading his ship HMS Discovery along the California Coastline. He named the site "Mojave" after Manuel Nieto, interim governor of Alta California under Spain during its time over that region including Rancho San Antonio de Baja California (present day Mexicali). In 1853, pioneer James Witte erected a cabin on what is now called Witte's Point on land donated by him to the Town of Indio in memory of his late mother-in-law Anna Maria Witte (1802–1870), daughter of Peter Kieft and wife Ann(1784–1839). The post office at Orange Cove was established on July 15, 1856; however, it did not open until October 1st due to lack of mail service from Indio due to Indian hostilities against United States troops stationed there at the time. It served as an important stop for travelers en route between Los Angeles and northern Mexico City. By 1870, oranges were being grown commercially near present day Lancaster County and orange juice production began soon thereafter; however, most citrus production ceased due to changing environmental conditions (the 1906 fire destroyed much oftown) or disease outbreaks (the 1904 pandemic killed many people in Southern California). Wrote one local historian: "In fact [orange] production reached such lows that only two small growers managed any acreage...It [the 1906 fire] also destroyed most buildings within
The area now known as Orange Cove was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first permanent building on the site is believed to have been a small cabin built by Captain John Brougham in 1779. The area became part of Mexico during the Mexican-American War, and for a time it was controlled by United States forces. In 1846, after California had become a state, General José Joaquín de Arrastre y Padilla appointed Commodore James K. Polk as its first governor. Polk approved Orange Cove's incorporation as a town, and on October 1, 1847, it became the 12th town in California. Orange Cove experienced dramatic growth during the 19th century; it became one of the leading fishing ports onthe Central Coast of California and developed into one of Northern California's most important agricultural communities. Growth also led to increased traffic and noise along its streets; however, many residents still enjoyed their quiet lifestyle until recently.
