Orange Cove is a small town located in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Orange Cove was George Wills in 1849. Wills and his family came from Georgia. A post office called "Cove" was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1959. Orange Cove began as a small fishing village on the banks of the Irvine River. By 1860, it had grown to include a school, mercantile store, and three families of fishermen. By 1870, Orange Cove had become an agricultural community with citrus trees and cattle grazing on land that later became known for its Oranges. In 1887, two brothers named William Humes opened a dry goods store at the corner of Broadway and Irvine Avenue in nearby Irvine. In 1893 they bought out their brother-in-law's interest in the store and renamed it "Hume’s." From there Hume's grew into one of OC's leading retail merchants with more than 20 stores throughout Southern California. In 1916 William Humes died suddenly leaving his business to his son-in-law Richard Bemis who ran it successfully until his death in 1951; then Dick Humes took over own father'sorship until he too passed away in 1984; finally Harry Treadway took over operations from 1985 to 1990 when he sold it to John Kappes who operated it as Kappes' oranges until 2000 when Steve Tran purchased it and re-established Tran Oranges Incorporated as well as operatingtraditionally outdoor markets during warm weather monthside indoors year round). A post office called "Cove" was established at Orange Cove on October 24th 1861 by David Sutter ( founder ), continuing service until May 2nd 1865 when mail was transferred to Newport Beach . On July 12th 1863 Union General Don Carlos Smith delivered an order for 1 ton of oranges from Calabasas to be forwarded through Orange Cove - this may have been part of Operation Crossroads which targetedSouthern Californianssupplying Confederate troops with food
The first Europeans to explore Orange Cove were the Spanish in 1769. They named the cove Santa Cruz de la Vera Cruz because of its location near the southernmost tip of California. In 1821, Captain James Cook discovered this cove and named it San Francisco de Asís after his ship, HMS Discovery. The first Anglo-Americans to visit Orange Cove were the men who founded Stockton in 1837 and named it after their town in England.
