Orange Cove is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern coast of Santa Barbara County and is bordered by Isla Vista to the south, Carpinteria to the west, and Oxnard to the north. The first humans in Orange Cove were Native American natives who lived on what is now known as Point Conception Island. They hunted seals and other sea creatures for food. In 1795, The Spanish founded Rancho San Buenaventura on land which now includes part of Orange Cove. In 1875, during the Gold Rush Period, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Oxnard and began mining operations in Orange Cove. By 1890 most of the residents had left for new locations due to high prices for gold and competition from outside investors. However a few returned in time for harvest season in 1892; one being W Rowsley who operated a flour mill until it burned down in 1907 while he was away working on another mine nearby. In 1912 citrus growers decided they could not compete with fruitgrowers growing grapes elsewhere so they closed their orange orchards here but kept some trees around as ornamentals; this continued into the 1920s when many grape growers abandoned orchards altogether because of Prohibition-era restrictions against exports of alcoholic beverages (see below). This resulted in an unusual situation where large tracts of undeveloped beachfront property sit today just offshore from town limits – including much of Isla Vista – while smaller sections are within sight but off limits due to prohibitively expensive real estate prices that have made it difficult for anyone everto build thereon even though developers have applied numerous times over the years! And yet despite all these difficulties redevelopment has been ongoing pretty much uninterrupted all these years! Why? Because there’s something genuinely special about this place: its unyielding determination not to change no matter how hard things get! In fact one might say that “the old guard” has more respect for stability than any other community I’ve ever visited! Today Orange Cove continues its strong tradition of family values by having a wide variety of churches including Methodist (1891), Lutheran (1910), Catholic (1912), Baptist (1899) and Presbyterian (1900). There are also several schools such as St Andrews Episcopal School which offers pre-kindergarten through 10th grade along with vocational education tracks leading up to college/university degrees; furthermore two grocery stores - Safeway Supercenter#1 & #2 - offer basics such as groceries, meat products and vegetables as well as wines and liquors both retail store fronts AND restaurant liveries! And finally there’s also established businesses like Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery which opened up shop HERE back in 1978 (!), started making beer here since 1886 (!), operates 5 restaurants throughout Southern Californian – 4 full service suburban locations plus 1 casual outpost inside a mall – producing 3 million barrels per year worth OF BEER!) Orange Cove was founded in 1875 by Captain George W. Eldredge and his wife, Eliza Jane Clapp. The first post office at Orange Cove was opened in 1876. In 1878, the town was renamed Eldredgeville after General George Washington Eldredge. The first store in Orange Cove was the Post Office & Provision Store on First Street which operated for about a year before being closed due to lack of customers. The next store, the Jardine Drug Store, opened in 1880 and lasted until it burned down in 1886. In 1882, Captain Eldredge donated land to establish a village on the north shore of Santa Cruz Bay called Orange Cove Village which would eventually become known as Irvine. The first school in Orange Cove Village was built on what is now First Street and operated for about five years before being closed due to low enrollment. In 1889, Captain Eldredge donated another piece of land to establish Irvine beach which would eventually become known as Newport Beach. The first post office at Newport Beach was open in 1893 and continuedOperating until it closed in 1916 when it merged with nearby Laguna Beach into one larger post office. It wasn't until 1923 that the name change from Irvine to Redondo Beach following annexation by Redondo Beach City Council from Hermosa Beach City Council
The Orange Cove area of California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late Pleistocene period. They built a small, adobe-style village on the cove's northeast coast in what is now known as Santa Ana County. The Tongva abandoned their village after they were forced out of their ancestral land by the Native American Missionaries in 1821. In 1845, Spanish missionaries began to explore and map the eastern coastline of California. One of these pioneers, José Garza, named a cove near present-day Orange Cove for General Antonio Mora y Godoy, who had founded Pueblo de San Fernando de la Laguna on El Camino Real in Mexico City. After finding no tributaries or other shorelines connecting Orange Cove to any other body of water, Garza decided that it was not worth exploring further and abandoned his idea for a name for the new cove. A few years later, Captain James Cook discovered and mapped Admiralty Inlet on Kodiak Island while sailing through Alaska during his 1789–90 circumnavigation of North America. This led to increased interest in exploring Nova Scotia's icy waters and provisioners began to visit Admiralty Inlet looking for rich seamounts and ice floes off its shores. As result, Admiral John Ross selected Orange Cove as one of three places he proposed be explored along Elkhorn Point between Kodiak and Nome on April 26th, 1891 under Flag Officer David Livingstone. However only two boats made it down to the point where they could set up camp; one from Sitka Sitka Company under Commander George Vancouver (the first European to landfall on Kodiak) while another boat chartered by Lieutenant Edward Beecher sailed into Oblong Bay but never reachedshore because detour across an uncharted channel led them astray within sight of Resolution Island before finally grounding at White Beach about 5 miles southeast ofObserver Hill light). From this point forward all exploration northward was undertaken by Russian ships with Beecher’s voyage serving as an unofficial reconnaissance service providing valuable intelligence about local coastlines which would have been highly important had Cook & company actually visited those coasts! With over 100 navigational errors committed during his Voyage OF Discovery including misspelling "Oranges" as "Orangesus", Lieutenant Beecher became known locally as “The Orangeman” due to this incident! The first successful landing ever attempted on Kodiak occurred here at Observer Hill Light just northwest of White Beach – exactly where LtBeechers boat grounded! Supplies taken ashore included fresh meat from seals killed nearby – thus beginning human habitation on Kodiak Island! Even though most Russians failed miserably at exploration in Alaska compared to later US explorers such as Robert Ewingross (who discovered Yakutat Peninsula) & Henry Wroughton (whomdiscovered Kuskokwim Peninsula), credit should be given both Russian sailors for getting us our first look at Kotzebue Sound - worlds biggest inland sea!!
