The history of coffee in Orange Cove can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1847, James W. Davis and his brother, John Davis, opened a small coffee shop on the corner of 7th Ave. and Collins St. In 1922, The Blue Bottle Coffee Company was founded in nearby Fountain Valley by Gordon Biersch and his wife Betty. The first espresso machine was purchased from Italian manufacturer Lavazza in 1952. In 1976, The Arco Coffee Company was founded in Orange Cove by Donahue Brothers with a small roasting operation located upstairs at the mercantile store on 11th Ave., just south of downtown. Donahue Brothers operated until 1995 when they merged with Los Angeles-based Peet's Coffee to form Peet's Coffee Corporation. After two decades of growth andication the company announced its closure effective December 1st, 2007 due to financial difficulties. On February 8th of 2008, Arco Merchants Incorporated reopened their doors as a new processing plant for Starbucks coffee beans called "Arco Roastery". On October 2nd of that year (2008), Starbucks announced it would close its Anaheim location - the last store open in Southern California - and move all operations outstate to Burlingame where it had been based since 1984[1]. However, after several months of speculation that the company might reopen its Anaheim location under new management[2], nothing ever happened; instead, Starbucks moved its entire production facilities outstate to Denver.[3]
