When the United States military first invaded Mexico in 1846, it was a new and exciting concept. At that time, there were no regular army units in California. The MexicanArmy was the only real threat to America's fledgling country. So when President Polk called up the Californians for service in the Union army during the Civil War, many of them eagerly volunteered. And so it began...the largest volunteer army in American history. The Californians fought bravely and generously throughout the war, but they ultimately lost because of their lack of combat experience and resources. Afterward, most of them returned home to rebuild their homes and businesses. But some decided to stay in California and serve their fellow Americans again...this time as soldiers in the newly formed National Guard. In recent years, California has been proud to be an integral part of both our U.S. military and global security efforts. We have made significant contributions to every conflict - from Afghanistan to Iraq - while also creating jobs and growing incomes for all our citizens. Our Defense Department is currently working on two highly anticipated projects: One is a massive new branch of the military called "The Golden State Warriors," which will strengthen our defense against any potential threats from abroad; and another is a $3 billion project to build a brand-new airport near San Francisco - one of America's biggest ever!
